I'm new to quilting and am still learning.
I saw somewhere a combo of the nine patch and rail fence and thought I would try doing that. (To me it kinda sounds goofy to combine the two...but it did look good.) The patterns I have for each though is for 12 inch blocks...is that too large do you think?
I remember reading in one of the postings about an internet site that can help you determine how much total fabric to purchase. I don't remember the link or the discussion it was under. Does anyone remember?
Thanks for any advice.

Here is a site that will help you estimate the amount you need.
http://www.quamut.com/quamut/quilting/p ... rdage.html
There is a Fabric Calculator you can buy too! It tell you exactly what you need for any size block or quilt. My rule of thumb for a 12 inch pieced block is 1/8 of a yard for each color.

Jennifer in El's book Still stripping is a pattern with 9 patch and rail fence. Her books have all the yardage for what ever size you deside to make.

Thanks! I ended up changing my mind and going with a pattern called Autumn Tints 2 from Quilters Qache. It seems like it will be simple to do. Hopefully.

Marcia at quilterscache does an amazing job on her website. Everytime I go to her site, I click on the ads, each click helps keep her site free for everyone. So remember to click when there.

I am looking for a pattern all the blooming nine patch.

greatly appreciated.

The Blooming Nine Patch is a pattern in the book Traditions with a Twist by Blanche Young and Dalene Stone. It has other wonderful patterns in the book too.
I made one in an online challenge. I used solids for a very different look but I like the florals used in this pattern better. The quilts are striking. There are many pics of them in Google images.

All of Eleanor's books give you the yardage.
As a rule of thumb, when I purchase fabric I get 3 yds of each, sometimes a little less for my stash. That way when I want to make a quilt I have mostly the correct amount.
