At what stitch should your machine (not a computerized machine) be set at when piecing? I was told I'm using the wrong setting. I've had mine set on about 1.5. I was told I should be making the stitches smaller.

Re: Piecing stitches
I have an older machine and my stitch regulator is 0 - 5. I set my stitch at half way between 1 and 2. I was told that my stitches should be smaller. The reasons was because you shouldn't be able to see your stitches clearly. I'm confused now.

My machine is automatically set at 2.5 when it turns on. I've used it on several quilts, never had anything come apart.

Re: Piecing stitches
I was told 12 stitches per inch is a good piecing stitch. I usually use a basting stitch first on tricky seams then resew using the regular stitch.

juliejaz....if you are concerned sew a scrap, measure an inch and count the stitches. I would only be concerned if when you tug the seams it loosens the seams.

'Shoudn't be able to see your stitches clearly" -- take your glasses off.
Sorry, I couldn't resist.
My computerized machine defaults to 2.5, but I bump it down to 2.0 I just counted and it works out to about 14 stitches an inch. Any smaller I would have issues picking them out.
Remember, there are no quilt police. If your piecing doesn't pull apart or fall apart, then I wouldn't worry about it.
