This is my first time of posting and have just done my first practise session with my Bernina 630. Scary !! but will keep practising. Am tempted to buy the slide teflon top which you stick to your machine and it helps the material to move smoother. Anyone any thoughts on this ?
WELCOME SAL.........I just entered into the world of "free motion" and I love it. You just have to make yourself a little "quilt sandwich" (top, batting,backing) and just start by writing you name. It takes a little bit to get used to it. I still need a lot of practice but am doing a little on table runners and toppers that I make for myself or on a quilt for my little furbaby (dog).
I have the "Supreme Slider" the gloves and El's "Machine Quilting book and DVD from QIAD and I wouldn't do it without either of them. I don't have all the special feet, so I just drop the feeddogs and go. I'm looking at machines that have the darning foot and I want to try embroidery so want that on it also. LOL
Just Go For It and try! Let us know, there are a few of us just learning here on the forum.
what is this supreme slider? teflon? My curiosity is peeked. I just told DH last weekend when I was trying to do some stippling practice that he I think he should "wax" the table area of my machine to make the quilt move a little easier! It's still not done...but added to his "honey-do list".
Itchn2Bstichn, Here is the link to the Slider from QIAD. It is a friction mat that stays put under your needle but allows the fabric to slide without a lot of drag. It's wonderful.
Oasis, thanks for posting the link. I had never heard of this teflon thing before, and it sounds like something I'd love to try. I do wonder, however, how big it is? I tried to google it, but can't find the measurements anywhere. Do you have it? How big would you say it is?
(My concern is not that it is too big, but rather that it might be too small for my very large extension table.)
Here is a picture of it. It is 11 1/2 by 8 inches. The pink side somehow clings to the surface of your machine and the white side lets the fabric slide very easily. You position the little hole for your needle. I think you only need it under your gloves or hoop area. I haven't noticed needing it any larger. But then I'm just learning. I wouldn't be without it after having it.
I think you will love it. No more drag and less tenseness for the hands, wrists and shoulders trying to tug the quilt around under the needle.
I don't normaly buy black, but I want to make the little scotty dog from the new Victory Quilts book. So I found some black batik with just a hint of burgundy running through it. Makes a pretty good backdrop for pictures also I guess. I'v used it more for that purpose and haven't even started on the little dogs. LOL
