Egg Money Quilt - Rosebud block

Post by ladyfleur » Wed Feb 13, 2008 3:51 pm

I am having major problems. I have the book "Egg Money Quilt" and am fighting with the rosebud block. I do not have the square up ruler but I am trying to get by without using it. I am very careful cutting the squares and even so I can't get the points to meet in the middle. Today I made a whole new stab at it and I am unable to square the 6-1/2" square so that there is a 1/4" seam allowance at all the points. In order to square it up I lose a lot of my 1/4" seam where I would be crossing the points or, if I make sure all the 1/4" seams are there then the ruler squares so that the main diagnal line isn't in the middle of the square. Please help if you have any suggestions. Thank you in advance.

I've looked in the online shop for this site and there is no square up ruler for sale. Is it just out of stock or what?

I like to make my squares a little larger, then square them up.

You are welcome.

I couldn't find that ruler either. Maybe you could send an email to customer service. Just click on Customer Service at the bottom of this page.

You can use a regular square ruler that has the 45 degree line on it. Just line that 45 degree line with your seam line (block pressed open), trim two sides, then turn the block, line up the seam again, then trim the last two sides. This is what I learned in perfect piecing.

I didn't do my squares like the book said. I did it the longer way. I cut my squares at 3" and on the wrong side of the light square, I used a fine point pencil and drew the diagonal line. Then placed the two squares right sides together and stitched 1/4" from the line on both sides of the line, cut on the line, then pressed open towards the darker side. I found it easier to finger press first then iron.

I then placed a regular square ruler on the block and trimmed like I mentioned two paragraphs above.

See if this helps any. I always get confused when they do the big blocks with all those lines. I just do it the long way.

Thank you again Evie. I have just finished my block and it is almost perfect. Perfect enough for me to be pleased with it. I am a perfectionist and need things to be done right. I can't thank you enough for sending me to the video.
