applique advice

Have any of you heard of The Thimble Lady? She lives in Australia. I think I saw her on Simply Quilts one time where she was demonstrating her quilting technique. When we decided to go to Australia in 2005 I e-mailed her to see if I could get a class with her. The classes didn't work out, but I did get together with her. Her main thing is hand quilting, but she is also an award-winning appliquer (sp). She has a book and DVD on both. You can check out her website at

Found out she is going to be in Kansas City in April. One class will be hand quilting and the other will be applique`. Her thimble was my big present to myself from Australia.

I used to refer to applique` as the "A" word. The wierd thing is that all of a sudden I got into it. But it happened the same time I got my longarm. There just arent' enough hours in the day.

After trying all the different methods, I actually think needle turn is the most convenient way, but takes longer to get the hang of. I am so NOT good at it. Did find out that I was trying to turn under too much fabric ahead of the needle.

Sharon, I checked out the applique website and I must thank you for the info. I love to applique and had done needle turn for years before I discovered El's method. This type of applique will be great when pieces are very small and difficult to do with El's method.

Found the following on a yahoogroups.com group - quilted_table. Thought all of you might like to take a look at it as it's very helpful.

"I just discovered a video tutorial on applique by Beth Ferrier of Applewood Farms Publications. Her site will be posting it's usual BOM quilt starting in February. Since her patterns are only available for a month, I always check a little early. Her applique tutorial on video only takes a few minutes but it sure took the scary out of applique for me.
