new machines
I'm a beginner who wants a better machine than my White Jeans Machine from Costco. What do you all recommend in the $500. range? Thanks

Re: new machines
I just bought a Janome Quilters Companion and love it so far. I deliberated between my Janome and a Viking. I love the needle up/needle down feature and it doesn't get bogged down on thick seams at all.

I also have Janome and love it. But, I also have a Singer 301A that I got off EBAY for $200. I learned to sew on that machine and love it. I have come to find out that alot of quilters use them. Brand new go with Janome. Antique go woth the Singer.

Janome is a good one! Go try one out....get advice and decide which price range and features you want it to have, then, it will become easier to decide. I thought about it awhile before buying one. I tried out different brands. A large throat space is important if you are going to quilt the quilt on your machine.

Re: new machines
I have the same machine, a White Jeans Machine( I bought it from All brands.com about four years ago), for the most part it works fine. Nothing too exciting about it though. I've been looking at different machines and I think I'd like to have the Jenome 6500, but I can't find one at any sewing shop. I've seen one (only one) on Ebay, but I'd like to get one from a shop - but no one seems to carry them. Even online there seems to be a shortage of that particular machine.
I talked with a dealer when I took my sewing machine in for a tune up and he said I should just go ahead get the Jenome 9500 because it's the newest model in that series (I don't know if it is or not, but I'm pretty sure it's more money). I didn't think buying a new machine would be such a hard decision when I first started looking...if only money wasn't an issue.*sadness*

Hi Julie, I have the Janome 6500 and I love that thing! The 6600 replaced the 6500, Janome isn't making the 6500 anymore. I got mine for $997 right before the 6600 came out. You may have to buy one used, which would be great because it would already be broke in and ready to go. Amie

Is the 6600 as good as the 6500?
