Combining Flannel & Cotton/Poly blends?
I have a quilt club at church and my minister asked me this question about a quilt she wants to make for one of her grandbabies:
Can you have a flannel backing on one side of the quilt and a pieced top of cotton/poly blend on the front?
Also if so - would she still need to have batting?
She found a superhero pattern that was in flannel but searched for more of the same type in flannel and couldn't find it. She searched the internet too.
What's your opinion? I'll pass on the info to her.
thanks - Shelly

Shelly - I have no idea. I'm sure some of the quilters here will be able to answer you. They're a savvy bunch, you know.

The vast majority of my quilts have cotton fronts and flannel backings. I've never had a problem.

The cotton poly blend probably won't shrink like the flannel. Using poly/cotton can be risky. The poly doesn't hold up as well as 100% cotton. Is she set on the poly/cotton?

I would tell her to wash the flannel in hot water to pre shrink it. She probably could use cotton-poly on the front. But now a days most people use 100% cotton. When I first started quilting (many yrs ago) not know the difference I used cotton poly fabric and that quilt is still in good shape, I hand quilted it and use it on my bed. Marge
