Thanks again, all, for all your nice comments! Let's see if I can answer all your questions...

First of all, Linda and desertquilter - yes, I certainly live "right smack dab in the middle of history", and could without any problem tell you plenty of magical historical stories that may bore you to death, LOL! And, come to think about it, I can't refrain from telling you one, actually...:-)

The cathedral was an idea that the Dansh Viking king got around 1150 when he converted to christianity, having grown up believing in the whole bunch of old Nordic gods before that. But, the guy he contracted to build the church had huge problems finding people who would help him build it, because the peasants in the area believed that a building that big could never stay up - they thought it would just fall down on them so they refused to help. He tried to claim that it was god's will to have it built, but it did not help at all. So, he resorted to the Nordic mythology instead, and convinced the peasants that a giant called Finn (who presumably lived in the area, LOL!) would help, and that Finn had also promised to stay forever to support the church walls. That did the trick, and after a number of decades the cathedral was finished. In the crypt (or whatever the basement is called) there is still today a stone figure - presumably the very ungodly Finn turned to stone so he would never leave - hugging one of the pillars supporting the floor, and this is one of the big tourist attactions here, LOL! I'm not a religious person, so I don't go there very often, but there are so many fun and fascinating stories about the cathedral that really was the first building in the town!

Oasis, well, the down town buildings have stores on the ground floor, and normally apartments for people to live in on the floors above.

LOL, cindyg, you have a great imagination!!! All the little stores you mentioned are indeed there! Add the butcher's, the hairdresser, plenty of restaurants, and quite a few more bars than the one you mentioned, and you pretty much have the full picture!!!

cyberspacequilter, there are plenty of tile floors, but I don't think they are very colorful. Will have to keep that in mind, and pay more attention, now that you mentioned it!

nanjam and calico, yes, I had heard the expression but I didn't know that the dull Jack also had a sister Jill, LOL! I'm certainly her, alright!

And, thanks for telling me the name of the plant - it is indeed ivy! I learn something new here every day! You girls (and guys) are the best!

HSMary is it quite like its own village. Do people live their all their lives or just while working in the area?

Beautiful historic buildings! I too wish my town was more old fashioned looking. The next town over use to be the capital of AZ 'in the beginning' but they moved it south many years ago. Prescott still has the original town square with the court house in the middle that they use. One of the streets has many victorian homes with huge trees lining the streets. Quite the tourist trap but it is a beautiful part of town.

Thanks for posting pics! and seeing you too. I figured you were younger than most of us on here. Don't let work intrude on your quilting! You can always find time here or there, even 20 minutes is better than none! lol

Tiggersmom, no, people move in and out of the town all the time. It really is a university town, and I think half the people who live here are in one way or the other linked to the university. There are 35 000 students here, plus all the faculty and other people working at the univeristy, plus all the exchange students (including quite a few from the US every year!), and all the high-tech research and development companies that are semi-attached to the university.

So, while it looks really old - Swedish measures - it is in fact one of the most modern and international towns around here. The bars and restaurants are often serving the same food and drinks as in Paris or New York, and the clothes stores always just have the most "fashionable" stuff... It is really the best mix you can ever imagine between really old and really new!

Mary, you and your town is so lovely. So glad they won't tear down buildings just to add roads.
Looks so fresh and clean.

HSMary

How beautiful are those photos. Brought back fond memories of my trip to Ireland where the streets and villages are so similar.

And what a doll you are!!

Thanks for sharing the photos--they sure brightened my day!

Marie, thanks so much for posting the pictures!!! You, indeed, do have another hobby - you just haven't recognized it as that! Your pictures are as good as I've seen in any book or postcard!

I agree - your pictures would make a wonderful quilt!
