Mistake on quilt top
ok I was quilting on my shortarm today and the needle broke, have not had this problem befor, and it tore a small hole in the top. Now I am lucky because this was not a customers quilt, thank goodness. But it is a quilt my quild is going to sell chances on. I can fix it by putting a applique snowman where the hole is but my question is.. has this happen to any one else and what do you do if it is for a customer? I have sewn 10 quilts for other people and 8 of mine and never had a problem. The ladies trust me with there quilts and I would feel horrid if I had done this to one of there quilts.

Re: Mistake on quilt top
Marcia, I've been la quilting for over 3 years and this has happened to me only one time. The quilt happened to belong to one of the lqs owners and its was her daughters quilt. My needle didn't break but one of the mechnicisms did and caused the hopping foot to drop with the needle in it as I slid the machine back across the quilt to get it ready to advance to another row. . . . . I was in Tears!!!!!
It was a small 'L' shaped tear. When I got ahold of myself, I moved the machine out of the way and parked it. I have a 'tube' of """Unique Stitch""" [one of the best products on the market] IMHO,
I carefully [sewed with a tube] put the pieces together and it was in a busy part of a print and you had to look really hard to find it. OF COURSE, I called my customer and told her what happened! Being a quilt shop owner she knows how 'crap happens' and was very nice about it. She could tell by my voice how upset I was and when I delivered the quilt she said she just wouldn't tell her daughter!!lol, it sure wasn't funny at the time.
Since this happened on the weekend, I had to wait until Monday to call Gammill and they told me what part my dh could by at the local hardware store to fix the problem!
I've used this '''unique stitch''' on my dh's denim pants to patch/sew them. He's doing electrical work and so far these pants have been washed and worn to work for months and everything is holding together with no fraying! You can get this product at the local quilt store or on-line or I think Joanns carries it.
This product is white and thick, not like fraycheck that bleeds into the other fabric. It doesn't leave a ring.

Re: Mistake on quilt top
Thank you so much, I showed it to my quilt group tonight and they were very very nice about it. We are going to applique snowmen on the block that matches the rest of the quilt. Since there are other blocks that has applique it will join right in. I am so lucky! Thanks alot for your advice and I am going to get some unique stitch next time I go to Amarillo.

You're welcome ladies. I think its worth keeping in our arsenal of quilting/sewing items.........for ""just in case"" problems.
I've even used it on embroidery's we made for dgd tote bags before I machine sewed the edges down after they were 'glued'.

The Gammill company told me about using Magic Sizing for repairing the holes when you need to tear out some of your stitches it works great have you ever tried it?

I think a lot of the local quilt stores have it or try Joanns. I'm not sure about walmart. I'm sure its available in lots of places.
Nadine is that the Magic sizing you use instead of spray starch?
