Working outside the box--autograph quilt
We are throwing a suprise 60th birthday party for my sister. I am planning a twin sisters wallhanging for this and will use it as an autograph quilt. What I would like to do is have the quilt finished and have guests sign it at the party, instead of a guest book. any suggestions for stabilizers or whatever to helpmake signing a finished quilt would be welcome. If I do it this way, she can just take it home and hang it, and it is so close to the holidays I ddo not know if I could quilt it up after the fact if I just used the top. Thus, I want it finished ahead of time.It won't be really washed as it is a wall hanging. Any thoughts?

I made mine ahead of time and get the pens for writing on cloth.
I use the brand Micron. They come in a single pack or 6 in a pack.
If you have very many people there, you will maybe need more than 1. You don't want to run out. Some people use the sharpie- fine point. I prefer the first brand that I mentioned. Now, when it is all signed, take a plain cloth and place over it, and iron or fix the names quickly on the cloth. That way, when or if ever it is washed, the names do not wash out. The pens cost about 16 dollars for 6. I have had mine about 3 years. But, get the coupon at Joann's and use the 40% or 50 % off. That is how I use those coupons there. You can get these pens other places also. Always try the pen on a sample material just as if it were the real cloth.
Don't get it damp--the ink will run. Have fun and good luck! Hope this helps.

I was more concerned about keeping the fabric taut. Is that an issue? I have the pens already.

Maybe you could use a stiffer fusible on the signature block part, it is kind of hard to sign if not taut

If it's going to be a wallhanging, then I think a fusible interfacing ironed on to the signature parts would work well! It won't need to be soft and cuddly like a bed quilt, yet it could be washed if needed. Be sure to heat set the signatures, though. And I, for one, LOVE the idea of it being DONE and DELIVERED after the party!!

What type of batting is best if you are going to heat set the signatures after the quilt is quilted?

Does the invisible quilting thread melt when ironed? If it does, you might want to quilt with cotton thread.

Evie:
THANK YOU>>> I forgot all about the possibility of invisible thread melting,, I would have seriously wept if I had ironed it and it melted. I owe you big time. I was thinking og the iron on batting and a stiff fusible for the backing of the signature spaces. I think I will just have to work up some samples using your suggestions to see what works best.

YOu could always use freezer paper ironed on the back that is going to be signed on. I always put freezer paper on my labels to write with. A dry iron, not steam. Marge
