I agree with Carole. Aim for does it work. I was sorting out my fabric stash one day and a piece of fabric fell against another piece of fabric that I never would have put together. All of a sudden the light bulb in my head came on, and I said "Wow" that looks great together. So by sheer accident I used some fabric I never thought would work. So just go for it. Marge

I think the real answer here is "Do YOU like it?". If you like it, it's perfect. Don't worry about what someone else thinks....there really are no rules and no quilting police out there. Quilt to enjoy and enjoy to quilt.

It has always amazed me how you can put fabric together in a quilt that you would never use together in a dress!!

I think a lot of new quilters are afraid to use fabric that has designs on it. A lot of the new quilters I have talked to tend to go toward solid fabrics. Solids are fine for some things, but once you put several quilts together you will see that the fabric with design is just a much more interesting quilt.

Ipquilter...that is really a good idea about the camera. How do you get it to do the grey scale option?

One other problem I have at my favorite quilt store is light. It helps a lot to take the fabric outside in the sunlight. It's amazing the difference you see.

When I first got the glasses I have now they would turn into sunglasses when I went outside. But found that it worked against me when shopping for fabric. If I was in a store that had lots of light, my glasses were too dark to see the real colors. So had it removed.

Hi grammy65...To get to the greyscale on my phone I turn the camera on and press options. Then I select effects. On my phone the list includes false colors, grayscale, sepia, negative, and solarize. I always thought that a camera on a phone was the silliest thing I'd ever heard of until I got one. Now I think its the coolest thing on the planet!

I learned something new about color. It's called the Ives color wheel:

The three pure colors are: magenta, turquoise and yellow. The vibrancy of these colors individually is notable, and when they are mixed with each other in specific formulas, they create the most powerful and beautiful colors around.

Quilts made primarily with these pure colors immediately attract attention, whether they are displayed in a quilt show or your home.

I have the very same problem. I just ordered the "The color scheme bible" on this web site. I am hoping it will help me!
