Stash buying - method or madness?

Post by carrieg » Mon Aug 13, 2007 8:47 am

I realized something this weekend, when the LQS are all closed. I didn't have anything suitable for sashing to coordinate with my current project. I wanted tone on tone, or marbled solids and do you think I could find anything? LOL

I have lots of FQs, but they all have patterns. I have a small stash, but it's all patterned. I need to establish a method to my stash buying instead of buying 'pretty' fabric.

Do you have a method?

No method to my madness. I buy it if I like it and have the $$$ to pay for it.

I have a really small stash. I wouldn't even call it a stash. I just buy what I need for the project I'm working on. I'm new to quilting so maybe that's why I don't have much fabric. I have a little more of the JoAnns fabric but I used to use that for other craft projects, like making clothes for dollhouse people.

If I had the budget I'd get a yard or two of the colors I liked, in solids and patterns. My whole stash would probably be blue.

I just did an inventory of sorts of my stash this weekend. I have made the mistake of buying too many small prints & calico's over the years. I need to learn to buy lg scale prints to go with them. How do you learn to do this? I've been buying quite a bit of tone on tones, but need some lg scale stuff to go with it all. I guess I have always just bought what I liked when I could buy. Not a smart way to grow a lg stash. LOL

I realized that I needed to expand my choice of fabrics when I was looking for some orange fabric to finish my Holiday Round Robin Medallion. I did not have one piece of orange in my stash, I couldn't believe it. So I have started to think twice before buying fabric.

Generally speaking, I buy what I like when I see it. If I'm working on a project and see that I'm missing something in particular I need, like a nuetral, I buy what I need and get extra for my stash. Then the next time I impulse buy, I try to remember what my stash needs and get something like that.

If I see cool FQs, I but them, because once things go, they are gone. I don't have the buget to buy much yardage now, but would like to keep more solids around for borders and binding or backing.

SewSew, I went & looked and I do not have 1 pc of Orange in my stash. Not 1. Guess I should try to pick a few pcs out, next time I fabric shop. I have seen quilts that the orange just made it pop!

my method for stash building:

If I like it, I buy it (considering current budget, I ain't buying much) That's why my stash is heavy with blues/yellows and florals!

Next time I save up some money, I am going to buy some browns and greens tone-on-tone or marbled. Then if I get creative at 9PM, I won't drive myself too crazy. LOL
