Re: I must be crazy
Ann: the main reason for this is that I too need to be a much better steward of my fabric buying and using up what I have, plus having fallen in love with scrap quilts.
What do you think about a Log Cabin done with very bright, cutesy stuff for a teenager? Keep finding this bright stuff and it came to mind.
Quilterliz: I only cut up anything under a fat eighth. Wouldn't want to come across that perfect fat quarter project and have to force myself to buy fabric LOL.

That was a lot of work, I'm betting!!!
I like to keep mine no smaller than a fat quarter, if I can help it. Any smaller than that and I keep it in a small tub seperated by colors - like all the Christmas prints and colors in one - so that if I need it for another project, I can go to that... seems to work for me, so far!

Re: I must be crazy
If I've decided that a fabric is too small for use, usually a strip or less then an 1/8 of a yard, I cut it first into 4 1/2 squares, then 2 1/2 inch squares for my "put it through the machine at the end of a chain" box. If it's a strip that is smaller then 2 1/2 I sew it to another small strip and cut that into the proper size. I took this box to OH with me and when I was done with the projects I had with me, I sewed the 2 1/2 inch blocks together, then into four patches. Now they'll go into the box with the other squares to be sewen. I'll pair a plain 4 1/2 with a pieced and see how big of a quilt I can get with what I have. When it's done I'll have a quilt with fabric from quilts I've made, kind of a memory quilt.

Re: I must be crazy
I always get a big smile when I read about peole getting hooked on scrap quilts. It has always been a favorite of mine. I suppose it's because I'm a child of the thirties and there were a lot of scrap quilts made when people didn't have money to buy quilt materials and used the scraps they had left after making clothing. I'd say that in my 62 years pf quilting at least two thirds of the quilts I have made have been the "scrap" kind. I have three baskets (large) sitting by my cutting table. One is for light strips, one for dark strips and the other is for small scraps of indeterminate size and shape. Most of my quilts come out of those three baskets. It is amazing how many different quilts can be made from the 'scrap baskets' In fact my friends regularly 'shop' in my baskets.

Scrap quilts are my favorite!
QuiltingKay if we lived closer to each other I'd swap scraps with you! LOL

QuiltinKay: The only problem I have is now I don't have enough scraps LOL!! I've ended up purchasing a few fat quarters to have enough for the Log Cabin. I know I definitely have enough 2.5" squares for the Chicklets pattern.
After finishing my traditional charm Apple Core, I knew that doing it the scrappy way was more fun than I'd imagined. I truly love how the fabrics go together, even when they are ones you would have NEVER considered putting together in a quilt.
Scrap on!!

I'm having trouble with the concept. Do you just put things together no matter the color? Or do you put light/dark no matter the color?
I'm so used to picking out colors that go together I can't seem to get away from that. Just tell me what to do and I'll try it.

I have seen Alex Anderson on Simply Quilts put all of her 1 sz. pcs in a sack, shake them up, reach in and grab one without looking. Sounds good for a scrappy quilt but I just can't do that. LOL

Cathy: that's how I did my Apple Core - 900 different pieces in a basket, pulled one out and attached it and just kept going. The only thing I kept track of was how many in a row and it came out great!
Sunsup: the great thing about scrap quilts is you don't have to do a lot of planning, just pick the pattern and go! And if you don't have enough different fabrics, begging from others usually works LOL

Thank you both.
OK. I'm going to cut my scraps to a uniform size and throw them in a bag and give it a try. Any sugestions on a pattern?
