need math help for backings

Post by LynnS »

I don't have this in mind for any particular project, but I just read the F&P article "Quilting the quilt: getting ready to sew" and I'm a little confused. Math is not my strong point but I couldn't make sense of their write-up on the use of backings for wide quilts.

They wrote " ...for a quilt 108"x108", purchase 348", or 9 2/3 yards of 44"/45"-wide fabric (116"+116"+116"=348")."

Why do they add 116" three times? I don't get it. Help?

I would assume it is because you need three lengths of the 44" wide fabric...?

OK so it's 108 plus 4" top and bottom=116", and three widths. Got it. I never said I was good at math...

I'm so glad they make wide backing fabric now.
