Has any one done a friendship star quilt?

Post by mcmema » Tue Jul 17, 2007 5:30 am

When you do a fsq is it a good idea to frame each block or should the stars extend into each other?

when quilting each block individual do you put the front, batten, and the backing all together> then when you sew it together at the end wont there be seems all over the back of the quilt.. Im asking this question because ive never done any kind of quilting I have always tied my quilts because I never learned how to quilt? would it be possible to quilt on one of the old brother machines with only one presser foot(the main one that came with it?)

Lots of questions ..Sorry!!

I have seen them set both ways, mcmema. I, personally, like to frame them - then I don't have to match the points.

I made friendship star a couple of times and I didn't frame them. It all depends what you decide to do. As long as you are new to the quilting part of quilting, you must have lots of questions just like the rest of did and still do. I guess I learned most of what I know about quilting from books...that is because I have only used the computer in the last 10 years or so. I learn better from reading books with good pictures than I do from videos or websites because I can always keep the pictures in front of me. The gals on this forum are great at helping....so just keep asking for opinions and directions.

mcmema,

I did a small wallhanging FSQ. It is from Start Quilting with Alex Anderson. The squares are actually side by side on two rows in the middle, sashing between the top and middle and bottom and middle.

You can do the quilting as you go method, I am not familiar with that type of quilting.

I finished piecing my quilt top, put the backing down, face down, layered the batting down, then put the top on. I then pinned the quilt. I quilted by outlining the stars and did a small wave looking stitch by expanding the width and length stitches. Then I binded the quilt.

I am not sure about the quilting with the machine you are asking about, but as long as you are just doing a straight stitch, I would assume you could quilt it. I know that I used the straight stitch on my Singer and did alright for not knowing what to do. :)

Hope this helps.

Susan

There will always be seams on the back of the quilt when you quilt it....that is what holds the whole thing together. No other way.

Yes you can quilt your quilt with your regular foot. I did when I first began. As you get used to quilting a little more and understand the stitch in the ditch etc. you may want to buy what they call an even feed foot or a walking foot....different names, same foot. It moves the quilt along a little more evenly than a regular foot. Check out your library for some beginning techniques of quilting and you will understand a little more...a little at a time...that is how we all learned.

I think what jennie is asking is about the quilt as you go method, as far as seams allover the back, but Jennie, correct me if I am wrong.

Personally, I do not like the walking foot as well as I do a darning foot. You CAN quilt it on your regular machine. It is what I do and all I have to work with. Your neck and arms will get quite a workout, though!
