I made the same quilt for a cowboy friend that had cancer. When I work on quilts for seriously ill friends I pray the whole time. John passed away but he constantly wanted that quilt on him. I used cowboy print the large squares were fussy cut with cowboys roping the chain squares were red and blue. I made a twin size... quilted it in a large meander to look like a rope and used PCQ to put cowboys in the border. I always look at QIAD books first for the design... easy and directions are great. Also teach beginning quilting and always teach log cabin. Nothing better to learn than QIAD. I have my students make the lap log then a second one of their choice in size but must be a 2nd log cabin and then Irish Chain. I taught QIAD when they started years ago in the Stretch and sew stores. Remember when we had no rotary cutters and tore the fabric... I believe El is responsible for getting quilting back and is why it is so big now.. Nothing better than QIAD!!!
