When I watched Eleanor (I don't feel worthy to call her El!) do the Lover's Knot on her show (which we get every Saturday at noon-eat your hearts out), I loved it, but thought it was on the difficult side so kudos to you. The colors are yummy.

these are beautiful - love the colors - whatever you decide will be great because they are yours - I would most likely do a tight stipple in the background and leave the color to pop - I know you said you are not an expert on free motion but contrary to what somefolks would tell you it really is quite easy - it is very much like doodling with a needle - did you doodle in school with squiggly lines - well just transfer that over to fabric - only rule on a stipple don't let the lines cross and try to be repeatative
