OT - My way to work...:-)

Post by HomespunMary » Mon Sep 24, 2007 12:15 pm

I know this is off-topic, but some of you wanted to see what my very old and "car free" home town looks like. So, here's a few pics I took on my way to work today...:-)

The centre of town is the Cathedral, built somewhere around the year of 1150 by the Danish Viking king!

Image

Just behind the Cathedral is the university (founded in 1666) where I work. As you can see, the fall colors are just barely starting to show. In the summer, the fountain is surrounded by a multitude of different flowers in all colors, and then I sometimes sit there in the shade and work on my laptop. There's a wireless high speed internet connection that works in the park!

Image

One of the university libraries is already wrapped in fall colors (I don't know the English name of the plant growing on the walls):

The streets in the town can't be expanded, because there are so many old buildings, so cars are banned in the whole town centre (although taxis and buses are allowed in some streets). So, here's what one of the car free streets look like:

Image

And, another one. I don't know if it shows in the pic, but in between the cobble stones there are white bike directions rather than car directions, LOL!

Image

And, finally, couldn't resist to also include a pic from last spring, of the magnolias outside of the main university building, because I think they are so pretty...:-)

For some reason I'm not seeing pictures that were added today.

That's strange, Lee. I can see pics in both this and other threads... Maybe you've done something to your computer?

Hi HSMary, Very nice photos of your town! Is photography a hobby of yours? I had the opportunity to visit Lucca in Italy and your photos remind me of that town. They are very much alike. What a wonderful place to work. Maybe I'll show my face too here someday!!

LynnS, I've never been to Lucca, but I guess that some of these medieval towns in Europe have certain similarities. When I was in southern Hungary a few years ago I saw the same sfinxes (don't really know how to spell that in English) as the ones on the university roof top on a church down there.

And, no, photography is not a hobby of mine. Never had any hobby, actually, until I started quilting. I'm still surprised that I find myself having a hobby at all, and don't know how long it'll last...:-) I work too much, so don't really have time for it, but I love it!

Thank you for sharing a lovely place in Sweden. Imagine...no cars! What wonderful buildings! You are a pretty lady and I thank you for sharing a part of who you are and where you are with all of us. Don't ever give up taking time to be creative...everyone needs a time to rest and enjoy using their imaginations on creative projects....all work and no play makes Jill a dull girl...:))

Your town is beautiful and so are you! It's probably ivy growing on the buildings. The cathedral is stunning. I can't imagine it being built in 1150! Amazing! Thanks for sharing the pictures.

Thank you for sharing your picture with us. Now we can visualize you when we read your posts. Your lovely picture fits your writings.

Your town is so quaint and ancient looking. I LOVE the magnolias and the down town looks like a fun place to walk and browse. Are the buildings downtown homes or shops? What a magnificent building to work in every day. Since I very much doubt I'll ever get to Sweden I thank you so much for the pictures. I couldn't imagine a place with no cars driving around.

Keep your hobby of quilting, you are a natural.
Have Fun,
Linda S / OASIS
