need help with quilting design

My grandma gave me a quilt that was hand pieced by a friend of hers in the 70's, and I can't figure out how to quilt it. I'm thinking maybe 1/4" from the edge on each piece, but I'm not sure that will be enough. It'll be hand quilted, which will take forever but since the top is hand pieced and the frame I have came from the same woman who pieced the top it seems appropriate.

Maybe feathers in the white areas and SOSD(stitch outside the ditch) on the colored parts. It's darling,BTW. I wish I'd gotten a few from my family. They all went to my cousin who doesn't even sew. Oh,well! I'm creating heirlooms for my daughter to pass on. Amie

Doing feathers would certainly be a challenge for me, I haven't done much hand quilting. I just realized I don't have anything to back it with so it'll be payday before I can put it on the frame, and it will be a long time before it's finished.

I think your 1/4 in idea is a good one not to difficult and gives you lots of practice hand quilting so you can do feathers on the next one.

I think your idea is good. I did a similar one of my grandmother's.
I used blue painters tape to mark it so I would have straight lines. It was my first hand-quilting project and now I am hooked. Good luck with it!
