Quilt in a Day Forums

Has anyone here made a denim quilt using flannels mixed in? I want to make one. I hear you don't need batting because of the weight. Also to use a 1/2 inch seam allowance and check the dryer often the first few times in. Any other tips, tricks, warnings, etc??

I haven't used flannel with the denim in the quilt top, no. I have seen many examples on the net of denim tops backed by flannel.

If you had both flannel & denim in the quilt top you shouldn't need batting, but how would you back it to hide the seams?

I was planning on a "quilt as you go" pattern I saw on Fons and Porter a few days ago. You cut squares of denim and flannel together, mark a circle, sew around it on the line and cit it out. You flip it right side out and mark a square in the center of the circle. Then you just join the circles on the lines and fold down the curvy part to make a little window on the right side. Or I could just sew all the flannel squares and then all the denim ones, and hide the seams on the inside., and just sew around the edge and bind it.

I've done several rag edge quilts using denium on one side and flannel on the other. I've made mine so the flannel was the backing. It works out very nicely. I've always put batting in between the layers because for me it didn't seem heavy enough, or warm enough without it. I really like big fluffy quilts so for me the batting was necessary.

Lynn, that's a neat looking quilt. As long as you follow their instructions it should turn out fine. I'd love to see a photo of yours when you do it and keep us posted about if it was easy or difficult.

I've seen "jean" quilts before but were kind of boring so have been stacking up different used jeans. I love the circle/square pattern. I'm thinking different plaid flannels in the squares. Or make the circles large enough to fit the 5 inch "Charm" square from the different swaps. I think Keepsake Quilting has flannel charm squares also or even flannel FQs.

If anyone makes one in the near future, please post a picture.

Hi Lynn. . . I was at Joann's today (to get Valentine swap fabric) and they had really pretty plaid flannels. When I get my next cupon in the mail I'll go and get some for the jeans pattern you so kindly posted for us.

I have so many things I want to try, it's ridiculous. If my fingers would move as fast as my "I want to trys" I could get more done! LOL

Love the cathedral window look of that quilt! Gosh, you could cut the circles from just about any fabric, too, and make all sorts of variations. This would be well-suited to a 30's repro quilt, or even something dramatic, with a dark background...WOW!
