Teaching new people

Monday, I am going to try and teach a group of ladies from our church the basics of quilting. Have some 8" squares cut out and thought I would just have them to practice hand stitching. Should i have batting and backing for each, or just have them practice stitch. Probably could do both for those that can sew.

Any ideas?....I would be happy for the most basic ideas.

Hi Helen--I think I would go ahead and make a sandwich. That way they'll have something to show off, like a potholder. Have fun and tell your students we all say "Hi!!"

A guild friend and I are starting a qulting BOM class in Oct. We are doing a beginner block and a more involved block each month. For the beginner block we are using HSTs. It's easy, makes a good block pattern and fun for the students to lay out the HSTs in all the different ways to create a block. The involved block has flying geese. The initial sign up sheet had 150 names. We are expecting at least 50! I have no idea what we will do if 150 show up. I guess have class all week. LOL

I like the idea of the sandwich also....like ipquilter says, it is nice for them to have something to show off.

That's great that the ladies from Church are willing to do this. I brought this subject up this past MOnday: to have a Bible class and to work in a block with the Bible study.
The ladies said they: don't have a sewing machine; don't have scissors - huh? ; can't thread a needle - all these excuses.
Then they asked (10 of them) if I would make each one of them a block to go with the study??????
I told them I would go back to drawing board. However, I would ONLY make one block to show them.

Just a thought, but you could turn the block into a pot holder and they could get the idea of how a "whole" quilt is done, and would have something useful to reward themselves..QG

CFS hit me harder than usual,this month,so never did get to teach them, however on first part of Nov. can try and get them started. Thought instead of quilts for now, doing yo-yos and making a yo-yo- Christmas tree.
