When buying fabric...
I found a big selection of Christmas Fabric at Hancocks yesterday.
It looks like really nice fabric and was $6 a yard.
I put several bolts on the table and asked for 1 yard each. Two were near the end of the bolt.
When I went to check out, two of the items rang up at .972 yards instead of 1 yard so I asked the cashier what was going on. She said that instead of a yard cut, these two were 35".
I'm sure the 35" will be enough, but shouldn't the person cutting the fabric tell me there was only 35" left instead of 36"?
Another store that I like to go to that is privately owned has a policy of giving you 2 to 3 inches extra when they cut in case the cuts are not even. I just wished they had a bigger selection of Christmas fabrics. Even the local quilt shop had a small selection of Christmas fabrics.

I would hope that the salesperson would tell you that.....otherwise you might not have enough, depending on the pattern. One of the local shops here also gives you a "little" extra. That's definitely a reason why I go there.

With a store entering Bankrupcy, I cannot see them giving an inch. And I do think the person doing the cutting should have told you there was not a full 36 inches.

it goes to customer service - i was at a hancocks several months ago and I don't know how ya'll audition fabric but I unroll some and stack it then stand off and look - I was told that I was no longer allowed to do that because it made the cutting table look junkie - I got the manager who explained that that rule applied to employees not customers
she should have told you

I have to say this is one of the reasons I go to my LQS I always get a WLECOME I may not even know where it's coming from LQS owner may be way in the back but I always hear her say WELCOME and she always cut's her fabric at least 1" larger. Customer service, is it so hard to be nice?

They should tell you there isn't a whole yard. Everywhere I have ever bought farbric will tell me there's not a complete yard and do I still want it.

Most places where I've run into that they tell me and also give me a discounted price if I want to go ahead and take it. If it's the end of the bolt and there would be only 3" - 4" left after my cut they just throw it in without charge.

Sounds to me like your cutter wasn't a sewer/quilter and didn't understand that one inch wasn't a samll thing when planning a quilt top.

I would rather shop at the LQS but they had a small selection of Christmas fabric. The lady who cut these was probably new or not a quilter. She also didn't talk much. I would think a person in sales would chat the customer up. See what else they might need. If it was me I would ask if they needed thread to match or what they were making and maybe mention some notions that might come in handy.
