I always prewash just in case there are any surprises.

I always wash first. I believe strongly that when you put as much work into a project, either clothing, quilt or anything else, you need to be sure there is no way it can be ruinedby something I could have prevented like dye that runs and fades onto the other fabrics or having the fabrics shrink differently. Pre-washing does that for me. It may take some extra time but I have found it to be well worth it. Just my two cents worth.

Marcia - to set that black try soaking your fabric in white vinegar for a few minutes before you wash it.
