SUPPER CLUB - sunday, Feb 10

Post by purrfect-lady » Sun Feb 10, 2019 4:07 am

Good morning!

We are frozen solid this morning at 22* and have a total of 9"-10" of snow (so far). It was too much weight for our tarp shelter so Bill climbed on top of the trailer so he could reach the tarp and started slitting it with a big cutter blade. It is over a metal frame so he slit the tarp at all the 'ribs' of the frame and let the pieces fall from the ridgpole over the trailer. We hated to do it as the tarp is 30'x40' and cost $350, but if we hadn't, it the weight would have collapsed the metal frame and damaged our trailer to boot. We brushed off all the snow we could reach and hoped it would be enough. I made a trail through the snow for Scottie to reach the woods - his personal outhouse. Then I gently brushed snow off some of our shrubs that were bending over to the ground - lilacs & rhodies.

Vicki's kids came in two vehicles to pick her up. They got both of them stuck in her driveway so we watched them for 45 minutes try to dig out. They got one free, but then drove it right back into the deeper snow where they got stuck again! So they had to do it all over again! We figured they were taking her to one of their houses as this weather is supposed to last all week long. But they brought her back two hours later. An hour after they left, we lost power. We texted to let them know, but they said "Mom has a little dry wood and we bought her 4 packs of presto logs." OK, then! Mom's taken care of!

we finished cooking our supper on the wood stove and then played dominoes by firelight last night. It was a nice change from sitting in front of the TV. Power was only out for 3-1/2 hours though, so the "party" ended early and Bill turned the TV on. We might be getting more snow in the coming days.

But - I was able to sew all day yesterday and I'm putting another quilt top on the frame this morning. Probably two today as the first one is only 46" square. It was in a big box of fabric that was given to me. It's rather ugly so I believe this one will be donated to Scottie's doctor for her animal hospital.

JANA - I knew you were high but not quite that high! I'd rather live in snow country than the desert, for sure! The history of Lake Bonneville has always fascinated me. Thanks for the extra lesson. Most of my info has come for the information boards at rest areas as we drive through Southern ID and UT. I have actually looked it up a few times, but that was years ago. Prayers for Kate's dad. Bill's step-dad had a glioblastoma. He actually did very well for two years but when he started downhill, it was quick. I hope he makes the wedding. I wonder if they could move the wedding date up for his sake?

CHICKIE - you are still frozen from your ice storm! I'm enjoying what we have, but sure don't think I'd like what you have! We haven't scraped a windshield since I married Bill (27 yrs ago) and he moved in, cleaned out the garage and we started parking our vehicles inside. SOOO nice!! Sounds like you had a VERY fun day with your DD and got some great bargains in the process! I love sweaters. I can't wear them (get too hot too fast) but I love them and have quite a collection because I buy them when I come across bargains like you did. I keep thinking one day . . .

BECCA - I don't know how much snow Hoodsport got, but they usually "out-snow" us by a lot. Though this storm was different. Generally Sue, up near the Canadian border, gets a lot more snow than we do, but she only got a skift this time, plus a lot of wind. You got a lot accomplished the other day. Hope CA gets some rest.

Supper tonite will be leftover stew. I will probably 'beef' it up with some canned chicken and more veggies. Or we might take a break from stew and have meatloaf and baked or mashed potatos and broccoli and salad.

This was taken after we destroyed our shelter. Looks much better than it would have if we hadn’t done this. I took the photo from the deck of the house

Sorry, I forgot to size the photos before posting. You will have to slide the grey bar to see it all. This is taken from our back woods. Our deck almost looks like a Swiss chalet in the snow.

Good morning!

Mary - sorry about the tarp, but oh so pretty in your neck of the woods. That storm is going to get me today, later this afternoon. The they arecsaying it will bring feetm not inches of snow to me.

Living here in the desert is wonderful. But you say desert and most, me included, think, Mohave with sand. But we are high desert with chaparral grasses and trees. I am getting used to desert conditions, dry air and such. Love to see across the valley, over to the mountains and how beautiful they are. If you get too hot here in the summer, just take a 20 minute ride and you are in the cool mountain temps. We do get warm here in the SLC valley, but not like St George in the summer. A well known, colorful man from here, a relative, once said about St George in the summer, "that if I had a house in St George and a house in hell, I would rent out the house in St George and live in hell". That describes how hot St George gets in the summer. Not anywhere near that hot here. Oh, to be warm now! LOL!

We did chicken caesar salads last night and will have reruns of the same today. Michael wants to watch the carbs at night so his diabetes numbers are better in the morning.

Church is a bit later and then tonight is the other meeting. Yes, the rearranging of Ward boundaries is to help the leaders of the Ward handle all they do. In fact, just a day ago, one of our friends in the Ward, about three years younger than Michael, went out to shovel off the snow frim his driveway and sidewalks. He collapsed with a heart attack. Another neighbor saw him fall and rushed over and started CPR. The wife called 911. He did survive the heart atrack and is in the hospital. The Ward is helping out, giving aid and service to the family. When Matt served as Bishop for about five years, he was busy all the time, even calls in the middle of the night over the Ward he served. Each Ward has about 150 families, so that is still a bunch. The Ward watches over and helps, even those who are not members who live in the boundaries. That is just how we do it. And even those who are not members, step in and help as well. Our neighbor isn't a member, but our friend and he takes the snowblower and does the sidewalks for us. It is a great neighborhood I live in.

Well, time to get ready,

Enjoy,
Jana

Hi all you snow bunnies and others out there, don't you just love the snow for a short time when it is so pretty. Then reality and winter sets in, sts get slippery, sidewalks are worse, and we stay home or deal with it. We also change dr apptmts. Don't need broken bones on top of other problems.

MaryZ, what a beautiful snow scene. Hope your trees pop back up. We had a snow and ice storm a week ago that left 11" behind but some of the bushes survived. Rain before snow is not good. But I will take the snow over freezing rain and sleet anyday.

Jana, you can keep that snow in Utah or send it a little farther north. MaryQ is used to more snow in MINN. She might yell at you too tho. LOL I too thought of the desert as a wasteland of sand until we moved to AZ in 1997. I grew to love the desert, the cactus, the critters, etc except for the rattlesnakes. OH, and the Javelinas (wild pigs). I got chased by one once and don't want to do that again. Enjoy your snow.

When we used to travel and lived in AZ in wintertime, I would tell folks with snow to go out and make a snow angel for me. Wellll, I have been here for 5 yrs now and have yet to make a snow angel. If I got down there, would have to stay there. And Rod would be no help! LOL

Our world in KCMO is frozen, iced in, a mess right now and more on the way. What little melts in daytime, refreezes at night. Kids have been out of school for 3 days this week, missing at least one day a week due to weather since Jan 1. And do NOT believe the weatherman. They know NOT of what they speak.

One storm said possible 2-4". WEll it finally quit 2 storms later and we had 11 inches total. Heavy snow too, lost lots of branches and a few tress and power outages all over.

This last storm, weatherman said possible one tenth of an inch of ice and a small bit of snow less than an inch. We got over a half an inch of ice, from freezing rain, then sleet over an inch thick on top. Looked like snow but just lots of piled up sleet. Try melting that stuff. Salt does NOT work on it and most of it still there a few days later. Have fun folks, winter is interesting this yr.

As for food today, lunch is going to be GREAT and filling. Rod just pulled his homemade scalloped potatoes and ham out of the oven. Letting set up a little before we eat. Will share some with neighbor too. And I know it is definitely going to snow. I was in bedroom, heard noises in kitchen again and there was Rod doing the dishes. He usually leaves the precooking mess for me to clean up. Thank you LORD. Guess you can teach an old dog and even an old man new tricks.

Gotta scoot, time to eat lunch. Hope you all have a wonderful day. Be careful out in this weather. It can be deadly when slick and so cold out too.

God bless everyone of you and your families too. Prayers for all your needs today. God knows what they are and HE will provide, all you need to do is ask and believe that HE will take care of you.

Sending snowy hugs and love across the miles to all, Shirley Mae

Good afternoon from a very dull, chilly, SW. Pa...We have no snow, we have no rain and we have no sleet and I'm thankful for the "dull".....

Oh Mary, what a shame about the tarp but what big damage it could have been...The pictures are beautiful, as long as it doesn't come this way...AND Mary, I know we're friends but you really don't have to share....I did have a text from Kathy last night and they were to get about 8 inches over night....Mother Nature is really whacky this year.....What's with Vicki's kids??? Or maybe she put up such a fess, they had to bring her home....I'd really worry about her and fire and I worry about you and Bill living close to her.....

Jana, I love, love to hear about your Ward and also about all the interesting lakes, rivers, country side in general...When I'm at Kathy's and we go north or into California, I'm all eyes...I just can't get enough of the scenery....And I often think back what must have been going through the minds of the Donner party, terrible....Thank goodness for the neighbor who saw the man fall and hope and pray for his recovery...You are blessed to have so many good neighbors....

Not much happening in my household but we are having some excitement in the neighborhood....There is a creek that goes through our little village and yesterday, someone reported seeing a body, so all day yesterday and starting again this morning, the fireman, police, dogs, drones, anyone and everyone has been out searching...The creek is only maybe 20 feet across and some places is very shallow but others, quite deep and with the recent rain, it's been running pretty fast...Just hoping for a good outcome......

Not sure what I'm going to get into this afternoon, probably not much...The other day, 2 other gals and I went to lunch and then to a new bakery and not sure what it was but something didn't agree and I've been laying low since....Just makes me mad, just when I think I have my "diet" down pat, all you know what breaks out, lol.....But, we'll get through it.....Tomorrow is another day.....

I might spend the day embroidering shamrocks while sitting in my recliner, (as long as BabyGirl doesn't think she needs to be on my lap)...

As for dinner, I'm thinking a poached egg and/or maybe applesauce....

You all have a safe, warm day......

Happy eating............
