I've made a lot of items with French seams... mainly garments where I wanted extra strength and no possibility of fraying. I think it would be difficult to make a pieced block using French seams. If it is only long, straight seams, it would be doable. If it is pieced blocks, I think I would use very short stitches and line the tablecloth with none or maybe flannel backing. I would definitely quilt it. A tablecloth will need frequent washing, so I wouldn't do a lot of complicated piecing on it. If you are talking about a French seam to join two larger pieces of fabric... go for it!

Good luck! Let us know how your project turns out!
