Beginner here, need ideas for selecting modern fabrics for a log cabin quilt. Just bought the Log cabin book & am trying out the throw (lap robe). Love the story of the quilt with the red centers & lights & darks representing happy/sad times in life. So definately want to keep that idea, just not in love with the calicos. Fabric suggestions appreciated!

There are so many wonderful fabrics out there. It has been a while since I made a log cabin but I would find a great small print for the center and then pull those colors out (using light and dark versions of each) for the outside logs. I would love to see pictures. Good luck. I am a retired soccer mom - the baby graduated from high school 2 years ago so I get to quilt like crazy.

That is what is great about quilting - you can do what you want - pick out the fabrics - stack them in about the width of your strips - and then step back and squint at them - look and see what works and what doesn't - you will be surprised at how the wrong pieces really show up.
Good luck with the quilt - will love to see the finished product!

Oh, I love batik fabrics!!!
There are tons of modern fabrics! A quilt magazine has ads for new fabric lines; a quilt shop, if you are close to one is a "candy store" of treats... The fabric manufacturers have websites that entice you with pictures of their fabric collections.
If you want bright and bold, Kaffee Fassett has spectacular fabrics that make amazing quilts!
Please PM (check on the envelope and "e-mail") me if you would like other suggestions...

I think batiks would be good.
