Selvages

are the selvage edges the edges that are cut after you buy your length of fabric or are they the white edges on the fabric that have the dots for the corresponding colors. ive been so confused about this if someone could please clear this up for me i would be very greatful

The selvage edge is the one with the white one it and the tiny holes too. You always want to cut those completely off. No since in ruining a great quilt over a half inch of fabric. Joan

That selvege is woven tighter - and will shrink more and wrinkle up a piece - so it is best always not to use them - but on the other hand - when you have sut them off - save the part that has the name of the manufacturer and name of the piece or line of fabric. This is a great help if you come up short. Also the dots of color on the side of the selvege are guides to help you choose other colors that will work in your quilt. They are from all the colors that are in the piece you are working with.
