I have not done any hand quilting but is waxed thread reccommended? I want to try a small piece soon.One of my goals for the year.

I have used the waxed thread before..and have even used a candle to "wax" the quilting thread...I think it really helps to keep the thread from tangling.

I think I would get the thread for hand quilting and then wax it.

Yes it is much easier to quilt with the waxed thread - you can hand coat it as you use it with a beeswax applicator - you can usually find them on the Notions wall at a Jo Ann's. It keeps your thread from tangling and knotting.

One more trick - thread the needle before you cut the length of thread from the spool - then knot the end that you cut - thread is woven in a one way design and if you are constantly tangling up and causing knots it is because the thread is threaded the wrong way. I learned this trick many years ago and it works on all threads.

I found another way to 'coat' the thread so it does not tangle. Just use one of those Bounce dryer sheets. Either pinch it tightly around the thread with your thumb and first finger, then draw the thread through several times, or take lots of stitches through it, pinch it and pull it through. Either way, the thread does not tangle, it is fast and quick, and smells good. Works for me!
