hi Donna...
if you go to quilterscache.com there are a number of blocks to choose from.. you can make them and sew them into a row.. either with or without sashing between the blocks till you get the size you need...
if you pick maybe a 10 inch block you can add borders along the sides till you get the 12 inches you are looking for..
let us know what you come up with.

Chriss had a good suggestion...that's what I'd recommend, too. Most runners are wider than 12".

Hi Donna, Do a search on the ten minute tablerunner. It also comes up as the fifteen minute tablerunner but very easy to make. And you can adjust the width as much as you want.
The original calls for a 10" wide strip by width of fabric (wof)for the main pattern. Then cut a contrasting or coordinating strip about 17-18" wof for the border and end points. This is where you could adjust the exact width you want by how big you want the border to be or just cut the center a little more narrow than the 10".
We did this in our craft group last week and comes out really cute and fast too. For a 58" runner you would have to piece the fabric because most fabric is only 42-44" wide. I did the 10" and the 18" and mine finished out at 13 1/2" wide so you could do a smaller center strip like 9" or a smaller border like 16 1/2" to make it come out pretty close to the 12 inches wide.
It does take a little longer than 10-15 min only because of the measuring, cutting, and pressing to get the borders even and press out the points on the end. The sewing part probably only takes 10 min when you figure out what you are doing. The first one is the hardest, then they get easier. Make a practice one in a small size for yourself to see how it all comes together. Then, have fun.

well ladies this is what I came up with it is so big I had to take 2 pictures of it. It is pinned on my table, I am thinking of just putting it on the machine to quilt it instead of doing it by hand what do you think? if I did it by hand I would b stitching in the ditch, if I do it by machine I would probably make diagonal line with invisible thread

That's very lovely. It's the Ohio Star, right? My favorite. Your colors are pretty. Great job.
My guild just had a demo day; one of the ladies showed us a quick (really easy) table runner. If you're interested, I could mail you a copy.
I'd scan & email, but DH doesn't have the scanner hooked up. Pm me if you're interested. It's easy & cute.

Take any square that you like, and keep repeating it until you get the length that you like. It is easy to do.
