Round Robin For 2011??? just an idea...

Post by shelly322002 » Fri Oct 15, 2010 12:48 pm

Hi all,
there hasn't been a 'Round Robin' flying around for some time, so I wondered if any ladies would be interested in starting one up next year.

I'm desperate to be involved in one, as it is a new thing for me.
I've been making one at home over the last year, and it would be lovely to put my practice up and running the way it's meant to be !@!*!@!

let me know if any of you lovely ladies might be interested to start one going...say, February?

************************************************************************************
(this was taken from a website...)

First, a general description of a round robin quilt for those who may not have heard of them.

It's a quilt that is made by a group of quilters (Group size: 5 or 6 people ) and it's a variation of doing friendship blocks.
To start, everyone makes a block for the center. There can be all kinds of rules for size, color , theme, etc.
The blocks are passed to someone else in the group. They add the first border. Then the next quilter adds the second.
This usually continues until there are five borders that have been sewn by five different quilters.
The quilter who made the center block then gets the quilt top back to keep and finish.

THESE ARE ONLY SUGGESTIONS.

You can adjust as you see what fits your group.

Group size: 5 or 6 people

the Center should be: 18”sq or 24”sq or 18” X 24” or your choice in size. The bigger you make it the more the people adding rounds will have to do.
Fabric: You may include all fabrics that you want used in your quilt or each person must add one fat quarter
Include a label that each person may sign and a journal tell why you made the original piece and each person can add a comment about choices.
Be sure to include instructions in your box or bag so the others know what you envision as a finished project (maybe at the beginning of your journal). Do you want only the fabric you provided or may others be added? What will the finished project be used for: tablecloth, wall hanging, or lap quilt? Will your quilt have a season theme or color scheme? What kind of appliqué do you want used or not used in your quilt?
The rounds may include but are not limited to: center, border and checkers, flying geese, star and/or appliqué, half square triangles and outside border. The owner is free to alter, add, adjust or do anything they want with the quilt.

Well, by February i may be ready, or at least i hope so, to take on something. However, I have no idea how a round robin works, I've never been involved in one. Can you fill me in, then I can make an informed decision. Thanks, carol/kittyquilt

Oh I think I get it now... You have 6 ladies adding pieces to 6 quilts (one at a time) that roam around the country sides until the one that she started gets back to her .... right?

Sounds like fun!

It sounds like fun but need more info and yes I agree with you that we wait until February.

You wrote that everyone makes a block for the center so what happens to the top when it is finished? Pick a name from the hat and let them quilt it how they would like it done?

each person in the group makes 1 centre, then they each pass sideways to the next person in the group on the list, who then puts 1 border on. then again, it is passed sideways to the next person on the list to add another border.
(kinda imagine 6 ladies sitting in a circle, each with a centre that they have made to their own personal taste, passing their centre to the lady sitting next to them to add a border, then it carries on until you receive the quilt top back again to finish off.)
a lot of fun!
each border can be a different technique...
this is my RR that i have been making myself at home without send it out to other people, but you can get the idea. it still needs a few more borders adding yet...
you can see my green centre piece...

then a few more borders were added... like i say, a few more borders will be added yet...
like flying geese etc...

Shelley,
I have never done a round robin but this sounds fantastic! I am just getting back to this site after about a year and a half - life just got way to hectic - but I now have some time to devote to quilting and sharing again.
If it's not too late I would love to sign up and February would be a good time for me to start as well.
? - do the borders have to be a specific design or can we do whatever we are inspired to do?

Thanks!
Tracy

welcome back tracy, that's the beauty of a round robin, you do what you feel inspires you, and what you feel would complement the particular quilt in-front of you in your hands.
as long as the person who the 'top' belongs to has not requested some type of work to be added to it, you should be ok to go ahead and work on it as you feel.

i agree, february would be good...

another question for clarification---does the "owner" of the center send any fabric with the center? Or does each person make the next border from her or his stash?

I just re-read Shelley's info and that says send all fabric or each person adds a FQ. As I envision, there may need to be more than a FQ as the quilt top "grows." Perhaps it should not be restricted to a FQ that we add, or we say that each person includes all the fabric. Personally, I think it would be fun just to set a theme or general guidelines and let each person choose the fabric they would think would look good and the "pattern" they want to use for their border. Just my thoughts. Since I've never done this, I'll go along with whatever the group wants--there are many out there experienced with what works best, I'm sure.

thanks, carol/kittyquilt
