Need help with gift from my Dad!

Post by QuiltingInArizona1 » Wed Apr 28, 2010 11:18 pm

Hello I am new to the site. Last year my Dad was at an Amish auction and bought me a solid white piece of fabric with a beautiful design drawn on it. I have never quilted anything like this. I have always cut and pieced my quilts. Can anyone tell me exactly what to do with this quilt? I want to make it and give it to him as a gift.
Thanks

It sounds like what they call a whole cloth quilt - the old school way is to layer it just like a regular pieced quilt and then hand quilt the design that is drawn on for you already. I would also used white quilting thread. When you have finished the hand quilting - bind it and you are done.

Also with a whole cloth quilt - they add dimension to the area that is quilted - stuffing it - I have used yarn for the small areas to raise them up a little higher - from the backside - just thread a yarn needle and put it in the spot you want and fuss around with it.

Good luck - it will be a great gift for your Dad.

Try to Google -- Whole cloth quilts for more ideas and maybe some books to help you too

Jana
Thank you so very much for the advice! I googled whole cloth quilts and my creativity just started running all over the place, I drove my husband crazy.
I pulled out the printed quilt top and it is a very large peacock. I read you can applique on whole top quilts, so I am going to add alot of color to the peacock. There are also flowers and I thought about making yo yos for the flower, and adding beads in the center of the flower. I am sure this is take a long time to complete. I am disabled due to spinal problems of I can work on it as much as I want to. Since I am home all day. I am going to buy a book on the subject so I can learn as much as I can. Maybe some day I have it completed I will post a picture.
Again thank you, you were a tremendous help to me.
