I bought batting for the quilt I am working on. It is 80% Cotton 20@ polyester,and I have never used this one before. It seems really thin, should I use a double layer?

What brand is it?? If it is Hobbs I have always just used a single layer.

what kind of battings good for a lap quilt? Im new to the quilting world and was just wondering...any helps awesome...

Ashley, I've always used Warm & Natural or Warm & White (same company-one is a natural color and one is white). You can buy it at JoAnn's and other places. It's 100% cotton. The teacher at the first quilting class I took recommended this batting for machine quilting and I've used it ever since.

No, don't layer the batting! A low-loft batting is preferred, and most 80/20 battings are low-loft, which looks really nice when they're complete. I never, EVER heard of doubling up on the batting, and I've been a longarm quilter for over 6 years. Please don't do it!

I appreciate the comments, I have always used warm and natural 100% cotten. This is the first time I have tried another brand. I use a quilt as you go machine method for my quilting. Usually, I feel it is heavy enough with 100% cotten. I have quilted one of my blocks and I think it is going to be just fine. Thanks again

My quilter friend (very experienced) has made several quilts using the Hobbs Cotton/Poly batting and her quilts are really nice. The thinner batting makes the quilt lighter weight and it lays so nicely. It is easier to stitch through this kind of batting also.

I agree with the thin batting. Have used noting but this for years. Good luck!

Has anyone heard that batting will roll up or bunch up inside over the years when washed and told me to use sheet blanket instead? This seems to me it would be extrememly hard to quilt.
What is the best batting to use for a bed quilt?

I have always used Quilter's Dream (80/20) that I get from a quilt store. They gave me the empty tube several years ago and when I need more batting I just take the tube in and say "fill 'er up!" I get 10 yards at a time. I love how it smooths out without stretching, how nice it machine quilts and how nicely it makes the quilt drape. I also just finished sewing all my leftover pieces together to make a piece big enough for several projects. It lies so nice and flat.
