Quilt in a Day Forums

I am new to quilting and have only hand quilted so far. How do you decide what type of quilting to do? All I have done so far is stitch in a ditch method and have seen so many beautiful finished quilts that have different designs. What do you do to come up with these designs?

usually you can purchase a stencil to put on your quilt top something that matches your theme sometimes you can get them in your quilt shop or try on line.

Tell us a little about the quilt you are working on. There are lots of patterns and books out there to give you some ideas and maybe if you let everyone know what you are trying to quilt, I'll bet you will get some great suggestions. Sometimes as soon as you see a quilt, or know what it is, it will suggest how you might want to quilt it.
With so many quilters here, someone will know exactly what you can do with your quilt.

Try this website - it looks very promising and gives info on "finishing" your quilt top. It was updated Sept 1, 2009 - so this is a pretty current website.
As a quilter and a computer teacher, I always "google" for information and it's great in this economy if I can get info that is free!

Thank you all for your suggestions. I completed the top of my quilt called City Girl and the information supplied has been very helpful.
I thought stencils were used but really didn't know. I checked out the site Shelley mentioned and have been reading the information for hours

There are many resources for Quilt designs. Books, Videos, Quilt Shows, Quilting classes; Some quilters start by just doing a simple Meandering stitch or a Stippling effect. I love the Feather quilting design in the Borders and some inner borders. Stencils, Templates, Tracing from a Quilt Design book all will help you. Good Luck.
