Quilt in a Day Forums

This morning I went over to a friend's and we dug through most of her fabric (as we were putting it up, I opened a drawer and quickly closed it -- there was more fabric in it). She had already gone through most of it pulling out the stuff she says she'll never use. Some of it was thin, or just not her style any more and some of it was simply ugly.

This is the same gal I got the pink and brown "ugly" fabric from a couple of years ago.

This time, in order to take the stuff she didn't want, but I wanted (2 1/2 reusable grocery bags full) I had to take this piece.






There is nearly 3 1/2 yards of it.

Anyone up to the challenge of using it to make something beautiful?

I once read somewhere that if you think a fabric is ugly you haven't cut it up into small enough pieces.

I think this is really pretty fabric, I can see it as fabric shopping bags, pillowcases, place mats or fussy cut pieces surrounded by star points for a quilt. carol/kittyquilt

Normally I agree that cutting it up into small pieces would render it "not ugly" -- however, there's way too much of it for me. Not to mention I'm not fond of these colors.

I suppose you could use it as backing for the front of an ugly quilt... 0:-)

I happen to like the fabric. I would make a tote bag and some placemats like someone else suggested. Marge

it's got the browns and greens... man colors... can they use it in Projects for one of the mens quilts???

I like it...too floral and swirly for men. It would make great market totes, duvet, small tablecloth etc. I guess I like this style...kinda shabby chic. Lucie

Pam how large are the indiv. sections of each color? Like the green, the gold, the brown. My brain is spinning. LOL

I'm passing this piece off to Carol/kittyquilt. Those diamonds are about 4" across -- just about like the picture shows on my monitor.

It just goes to show, one person's ugly is not always ugly to the next person.

I've done 3 "ugly" challenges over the past 4 or 5 years. The first one, it wasn't so much that the fabric was ugly, just difficult to use. I used the colors in the fabric to pick the rest of my fabrics and it became a narrow border. I really like that quilt and it got the second highest votes.

The 2nd "ugly" wasn't ugly to me - or most the participants - but the group leader couldn't stand it. Fussy cut the flowers and made a wall hanging that looks like a trellis.

The 3rd "ugly" was the pink teardrop/comma looking spots on brown from my friend. I picked pink and brown fabrics and used the 'ugly' as the dark chain running through the quilt. Even my friend who doesn't like pink and brown together admitted it looked good.
