Help with borders...

Is there a "rule" that says a border would look best a certain width when a block is a certain width? For instance, this is the quilt I'm trying to finish. Should I complete it with a white border and then the orange? Just the orange? Width of the border? Orange is her favorite color and is the backing - not solid orange - at the below site....Thank you!

Love this quilt! There are no rules and no quilt police. Here's what I'd do: those little 4-patch cornerstones - I'd put them around the whole quilt as the first border and then audition the orange fabric as to what width the final border should be.

Beautiful, bright colors. I know she will love it!
I like Cindy's idea. (Cindy always makes beautiful quilts!)
Also, if you wanted, you could do sashing and corner stones all the way around, then a white border same size as the sashing, then an orange border. The width of the orange border whatever you need to make the quilt the size it needs to be.
Play around with it till you're happy. As Cindy said, no quilt police.

Beautiful, knockout quilt! I love it. I love Cindy's idea too. Anxious to see what you decide. Thanks for sharing the pic.

i think i would 'float' the stars with a 2 1/2 inch white border before i added the orange. i have always heard that the border should not be bigger then 1/2 the size of the block, but like others have said before there are no quilt police here, i just do what feels right to me, lay the quilt on the bed and then lay out fabric until it feels right to you.

What a pretty, pretty quilt!! Love the multi-colored stars!
I would put a narrow frame of plain white around first, then....whatever width or design looks best to you! You can preview the borders by folding fabric into different widths, lay it out with your quilt, then step back a couple yards to judge the effect. (We have a tiny little bedroom and a king size bed. I will lay a quilt out on the bed, then climb up on a stepladder to see it from a distance. Not ideal, but it works...)
I recommend the philosophy of Ricky Nelson: you can't please everyone, so ya got to please yourself.

Just a thought to audition.....wondering what it would look like with the sashing continued around the quilt and then the orange border. I thought I had posted one I did like that but can't find it.
Really pretty quilt!

How about a border of each color done like piano keys? That is 1" wide strips of each color alternating around and then the binding made in the same as the backing fabric of orange print?

Thank you so much for all the great ideas! I really appreciate it. Today I'll make the decision, sew, and then post it next week. I may use a combination of all your ideas since it seems I don't have enough material to do one or the other :-/ I was also looking at El's Magic Vine and saw what she did and maybe copy that except no scallops on the border.
