Flannel and homespun question

While in Lancaster I happened upon to most darling wintery quilt top done in flannel. It is the washed out look, some kind of looks like a mens flannel shirt, Anyway, got off the track there for a minute. I purchased some washed out looking flannel fabric to make a 6 inch border so that the top is larger and also what I thought was flannel, but ended up the softest homespun I have ever felt. I already have the 6 inch border on. Can I use the homespun to make another border, maybe 3 inch? Should I make it bigger than three inches wide? Do you suggest rather than use the homespun that I get another flannel for the border. I would appreciate any suggestions. I am also thinking of maybe tying it as it just has that old fashioned "quilt and cocoa" look about it. If I tie it do I do any machine sewing on it at all, maybe the borders? Thank you
