12 1/2" block for the pattern

I really want to help in any way that I can with the newest El's project. I can make the 6 1/2' block with some wonderful pinks and green, etc., simple nine patch, but I would like to make a matching block for the 12 1/2" project. At least two blocks for each. Does anyone have the cutting measurement for a 12 1/2". I used the El's technique (wow pretty big work for me) where you cut your solid blocks, stitch the sides, then measure 3 pieces, etc. but I don't know with the 12 1/2" those numbers. You would think I could just double it, but being the non math person I am I am thinking it cant' be that simple. Headed to wash some fabrics. Thanks for including me.

Tell us which 6 1/2" pattern you are using and someone will pop up with the answers!

For mine, I drew a grid. I'm making heart blocks. 16 squares and half-square triangles. The large heart will have individual squares that finish at 3" which means that the unfinished square would be 3 1/2". The smaller block will have finished squares at 1 1/2" and unfinished squares at 2".

What you need to do is break it down to the smallest unit you will be working with (finsihed size) and then add in your 1/4" seam allowance.

So, a 9-Patch would need 4" finished size for the 12" finished size block. (4 1/2" unfinished)

2" finished size for a 6" finished size block. (2 1/2" unfinished)

So, let us know which blocks you will need help with.

Friendship Star is an easy 9-patch to make in both sizes.

Evie, I have never had it explained so simply.... I now get it... this has always confused me... I think it's the 1/4 inch thing...

thanks

You're welcome Chriss!

It can be confusing because you always hear "add the 1/4 inch" and you have to remember that it has to be added all the way around it so it's really "add 1/2 inch"!

Chriss,
Just like El used 8" to do these 9-patches(for 7.5" of needed fabric, 2 1/2" X 3), I suggest you use 14" squares (for 13.5" of needed fabric)--I thought about doing the same thing but then just did some 4-patches with 6.5" squares because I thought several of us might think of the 9-patch, it's so much fun to do! If I have time before the deadline, I'll do somthing else!

I am going to go with the friendship square block. I looked up the directions and with all this "knowledge" I am getting from the mystery quilt class I am going to, I can even understand the directions. Thanks for the suggestion.

One question, and I am sorry if I am being off topic, if I am, remove my post.
Doesn't the 1/4 seam also on the top, not just the sides, so wouldn't you want to make the block an inch bigger on all sides, like if you were doing one inch blocks, and you put a seam around you'd cut it two inches?
Thank you
Emily

Quilter__1012 If you want a one inch finished block you would cut it one and a half. Add 1/2" to a block when sewing with a quarter inch seam allowance.
