Almost Amish--would like advice

Post by SallyC » Sat Mar 14, 2009 4:28 pm

I'm working on an Amish inspired quilt and have added 5 borders so far. I have 5" 'ribbon border' with green/blue ribbon with black background (see pg 164 in Victory Quilt) and then I have 5" X 10" black geese with turquoise 'sky' for the 8th round. Should I keep with the 3" to 4" black between rounds or start making those bigger each time????

Center circle was paper piecing (although you could do it regular piecing. Website for the FREE paper piecing is (hope it is still there and still free....:

There's a different geese circle (also paper pieced)at:

Caryl Bryer Fallert has a shop in Paducah (for you lucky enought to go!)
I did one of her designs (in Love of Quilting mag, NOT paper pieced)--it won some prizes at quilt show in Colorado and I posted pic on the thread about how many quilts do you have--under Chat, I think.

I say keep the black at the 3 to 4 inch range

Yup, keep them the same size. It's gorgeous, by the way!

I agree. Stay with the 3-4 in. range. Amish quilts are my favorites and where I get most of my inspiration!

Sally, how did you get the triangles in the center to circle around like that...gotta know! Is the center medallion applique'd or patchwork? Great effect!

How big is this quilt going to be?? If it is going to be a bed-sized quilt, then I would do the 3-4in range.

This will be one beautiful quilt when done! It's already beautiful!

I, too, would like to know how you did those center triangles to circle around!!! Please tell!

you could try folding some fabric for the border in different widths and auditioning them to see what you like better. I sometimes do that and stand back and look at it. I always say do what you think looks good there is no right or wrong answer.
