Ironing board covers

What are the best materials to use to make your own ironing board cover? My DH likes to sit the iron down where it scorches the top causing the cover to wear out fast.

This is a great question! Hope someone with some experience can offer suggestions. I've never made one, just purchase them, but I'd really like to make my own (purchased ones never seem to fit right!)

I wrecked my cotton cover with applique' glue. Replaced it with a silicone cover from the Joann's notions dept. It fits VERY snug, had to struggle to get it on right, and it doesn't shift like the cotton one used to. Retains heat so watch out for yer fingers...OW! Otherwise, so far, so good.

The best ironing board fabric I found is BONash. It comes in a big size rectangle with adhesive backing. It sticks to your existing ironing board cover. I love it. Glue and fusibles wipe right off. I wipe it with a damp cloth and it cleans up fine. The iron glides across it without any drag. Be careful when putting it on, remove the backing paper a little at a time or it will stick to itself. I pinned mine around the edges then removed the backing a little at a time,smoothed, then removed the next section of pins, until it was all on. I had enough left to cover my June Taylor pressing mat.
I'm thinking about getting this cover next! Won't this be a hoot for one of the guild's board? LOL

I purchased an ironing board cover at the quilt show in Long Beach in July. It is the BEST ironing board cover I have ever had. It is "woven with Owens-Corning Fiberglass yarn and is guaranteed never to burn." I had never realized what a difference an ironing board cover could make in my quilting. It is amazing!! I have been making ironing board covers for many years. I use 100% cotton. They are easy to make and wash great. I know there are many out there to purchase but the cotton works great. It can be thrown in the washer. I use batting for the padding. I have made them from quilted cotton as well.

I am with "TooMuchFabric". I make my own. I also use cotton batting or an older mattress pad for the bed of the ironing board and then use cotton for the covers....when I wash one, I put on a clean one and rotate them...love the ease of making my own. Just measure your ironing board top and add a seam allowance....I make mine just the right size to stretch from one end to the other--- kind of like a fitted sheet without the elastic.

Do y'all use a drawstring to make it fit??

You can use a drawstring if you want to go through the trouble, but I haven't been successful with that. I usually just take the square ends and sew the corners like a fitted sheet, so they grab the corners and stretch under the edge...hard to explain. Then you can get some of those clips like the old mitten clips...they sell them in the bedding departments to hold sheets tight...they have a clip on both ends of a piece of elastic....stretch them from one edge of your cover under your ironing board width to the other...helps to keep the cover nice and taught.

I make them with a single fold bias tape (4 yds) casing and (66 inches) elastic. I believe McCalls and Simplicity both have patterns for the covers. Jo Ann
