Are you self-taught or lessons?
Did you start with quilting classes?
Or are you mainly self-taught, picking up information from books, the internet and informally from other quilters? (This is me).

Hi Kathy. I am self taught. A lot of reading from many sources, watching the quilting shows on PBS(QIAD-favorite), memories from childhood(watching foster mother and asking questions way back then).

I started with books and magazines, then went to the internet. I signed up for a quilt class, then a once a month BOM class, then joined the guild. I take every workshop offered and I learn something at every one.

I had help from a friend, read books, watched quilting shows on T.V. I would like to take classes, but all of them are during my work day and about 50 miles away.

Re: Are you self-taught or lessons?
My Ma and sister taught me to sew when I was little, like seven or eight. Picked up quilting on my own four years ago, have never taken a class, just learning, primarily from QIAD books, as I go.
I'm interested in taking a class sometime, but logistics won't permit it this year...too much other stuff going on.

No one in my family sews so I'm self taught. Bought and read a lot of books, watched El and others on TV, a few years ago started using the internet and luckily found this forum.....I've learned so much here!! I did take one class on machine quilting but that was a big waste of 50 dollars and several hours of my time!! I've learned more on this forum about MQ than I did at that class....the teacher SUCKED!!!

Self taught - LOTS of books, magazines, TV shows...just kept plugging away! I love this forum and I LOVE El's books! They are PERFECT for beginners and everyone, for that matter.

Re: Are you self-taught or lessons?
I took sewing in a home ec class in the 7th grade and have been hooked on sewing since. In my 20s I sort of copied a quilt that I had seen and got a little better with each quilt (for babies and children mostly). Measuring/size of the pieces was my biggest problem. Went to work full time and then in the 70s took a Log Cabin by Eleanor Burns class at House of Fabrics and I was completely hooked. Watched/taped/read anything El did after that.
Like the others I have learned so much just being on here. Last summer I even tried my hand at Trapunto and free motion feathers! LOL
El's books are the absolute best for any level.

Re: Are you self-taught or lessons?
Was taught how to use sewing machine by home ec and my step mom on her Singer. Quilting is totally self taught through books and videos and lots of help from the internet. Really started wanting to do patchwork (started out with just basic squares sewn together) after reading "The Quilter's Apprentice".
