After seeing the fabric tents at QIAD in Paduach I'll never again wonder why the fabric is torn and not cut! No way I'd stand there and cut fabric all day, no one can do that for long. I request tearing whenever I buy fabric now. It makes the edges perfectly on grain.

ollie1shoe, I don't like my fabric torn either. I know it is supposed to make it straight on the grain, but I still don't like it. Back home, they do that, so I just don't buy any fabric there. I really do like mine cut. Linda

ollie1shoe, I would definitely call and let them know and ask for a new piece or some additional fabric. Somebody goofed. Sometimes they have extra help there and that person doesn't do it right. 3 inches! that's an awfully lot to waste. I'm sure QIAD would like to know of this problem and make it right.
I had a piece of fabric one time that had a cut at 1 yard, but it was a 2-yard piece. I immediately let QIAD-Linda know. I was able to use the piece and so I didn't need a replacement, what I wanted it for was small pieces. But Linda was very thankful that I had notified her so they could check out if someone is "cutting" incorrectly. That is not acceptable at QIAD. By all means, call or pm Linda. carol/kittyquilt

The advantage of tearing is that the fabric tears along the straight of the grain. Then all that needs to be done is to neaten the edge with a rotary cutter.

We all know that a rotary cutter is only as accurate and careful as the one who wields it. My intentions can be the best, but if I am distracted, the cuts wind up crooked. Par for the course!

When fabric is torn, you are getting the straight grain for sure. I know that QIAD always gives you extra because of the torn edge. Did you measure to be sure that you are really left with less than you ordered?

IMHIO it is much better for the fabric to be torn so that it is "on grain". Might as well start knowing it is "on grain" then trying to guess.
