Quilt in a Day Forums

How hard will it be to make a quilt out of a spandex/knit kind of fabric? It is stretchy, and thin but I think if I use a zig-zag stitch that might stop the seams from coming apart. ??? Any ideas? I am not sure where my MIL got the fabric from, but I got something very similar to it at JoAnns. I don't remember what they called it and I can't find it on the website.

Any special reason to use this fabric in a quilt? It would be in bag labeled Thrift Store as fast as I could get it in there.

Maybe a serger would be better to sew this type of fabric.

YOu are so right Sewbug. Get that bag out of the house as soon as possible. LOL My nerves could not stand the frustration I would have using that type of fabric for a quilt. Marge

I wish I could. My MIL thinks this is "high quality fabric" and my FIL begged me to make a quilt out of it because he doesn't want MIL to make curtains out of it. This poor woman can't sew a straight line to save her life and her curtains come out all funky and crooked. I'll take pictures later of the curtain she made for us, they are very sad looking. So FIL begged me to do this so he wouldn't end up with "nasty curtains" is how he puts it.

If it was me, I guess I wouldn't make anything too complicated. Maybe large squares, to cut down on seams. I too would use a zigzag on seams to hold it together. I'm sure someone else may have other ideas

Rock on, Michelle. Stabilizer on those seams for sure and I'm with Grammy, nothing too complicated, large squares or something. I think Sewbug is right as well, a serger would be good Good luck!

It probably Lycra and I wouldn't dare use this for all the tea in china in a quilt that sounds more like swimsuite fabric .
unless you would use it for a texture quilt for alhzimers patients.

I would use iron on stablizer and see how that worked. That would get rid of the stretchy, I think.

I agree - use a stablizer. Try it on a practice piece first to see if it is soft enough. If it's too thick, try using 505 adhesive spray and attach it to some muslin before cutting it and sewing it.

I would also do something like a zigzag stitch when quilting instead of stitch in the ditch so you could really nail those seams down.

I agree, stablizer, or maybe, fuse it to some muslin. It's going to be tricky because I believe that type of fabric melts pretty easily.
