I've finally got all the blue jeans apart..whew!! Have a lot of them! The questions I have: What's the best way to determine what size my squares should be? Needless to say..jeans are varying in size. Also, what can be done with the pockets? I wanted to use them in the quilt(s) but didn't want to have to use the seam ripper to get rid of the stitching & thought they were too thick to use as is. Also, what can be done or made with the double seams I ended up with? Can anyone use them for anything? I will happily send them to you if someone wants them. I hate to waste or throw anything away! You should ask my DH about my sewing room! LOL!!! Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Gina I usally cut 6 and 3 1/2 inch squares. Then make 4 paches with other fabric and the denim and mix in other fabric. I use the pockets as a square and just sew over the seams if they fall in the middle of a square.
Be sure to use a 1/2 inch seam.
We make these as charity quilts in our church group so they are tied.
Good luck can't wait to see what you make.
HUGS!

Gina,
I usually go with a 9" square for my jean quilts. As far as the seam goes,if I can manage it so that it's towards the center of the block - it works out a little better. I cut as many 9" squares as I can and then try to piece other 9" squares out of the leftover pieces (these I try not to use the seams on. If I can round up a picture of one I'll post it for you.
Good luck, I think they are fun to do - and really warm! I make them a lot for stadium blankets for football games etc. They're a little more durable than a normal quilt.

I made one for a friend at Christmas. I cut two or three different colored pockets and appliqued them to my 8" squares. I also used some flannel with it and cut snap pockets from western shirts.

I am in the process of making a jean quilt as well. I tried sewing the squares together but it was just too thick and bulky. (I have all men's jeans...heavyweight denim.) I am serging the edges and then sewing them onto a sheet of muslin. I cut my squares all different sizes, then thought large sqs would have been better. Then I could have used a lattice around each block to hide serged edge. Still tring to come up with an idea for the smaller sqs. Any suggestions?
