Eventually finished!

Post by HomespunMary » Wed Apr 30, 2008 11:38 am

I started on this quilt for my god daughter over a year ago, and have already posted a few pics along the way. But, I'm so happy it is eventually finihed that I can't resist to post a few more :-)

It all begun with a butterfly block I saw in a magazine and really loved. I made a test block (I had only made two quilts before I started on this one) to see if I could handle all the little pieces, and it quickly turned into more butterflies:

I didn't really have a plan for the rest of the quilt, but started to think that a "lawn look" with other other garden creatures and flowers would be nice. It was spring, so I was inspired by the spring flowers. These blue flowers are among the first to come up here every spring, turning the lawns around the university all blue, so decided to include one of these (and also make my first ever paper pieced block, LOL, even though I have a strong suspicion it is actually not the same flower):

And, the magnolias are something of a "trademark" for my town, so of course I needed one of those:

Then I tried to find a dragonfly block but with no luck. So, decided to try out some pattern construction on my own :-)

Image

Together with the magnolias, this town is full of black crows (or, rather a similar bird with a name I don't know in English). I also couldn't find a pattern for these, but found a picture on a finished block, so tried to recreate it:

At some point I settled on "framing" all the blocks within an Irish chain, but ran out of inspiration for what to do for the last block needed. Luckily, someone here (leetec, if I remember correctly) suggested a watering can, so I went back to the drawing board again :-)

And, after adding a picket fence border, and quilting it (which took forever), I finished sewing on the binding today! And, here's the result:

And, finally, a closeup of one of my favorite blocks in the quilt :-)

It feels so good to finally be finished. And, I only have half of the binding left on my next one, so if all goes according to plan I will actually finish two quilts this week :-)

Thank you to all of you who have helped me with tips and ideas along the way! I probably wouldn't have finished it without you guys :-)

Thanks girls :-)

Forgot to say that the left border looks so crooked because I had to hang it from the side and then flip the picture :-)
