What type of stabilizer is best for machine applique. I used printer paper the other day and it was difficult to remove. It was only on a test applique, but I want something nicer for the finished product.

I've used----used dryer sheets before. But I prefer an iron down backing.

Purchase a roll of tear away paper. It is the weight of tissue paper but lays flat against yr fabric. It tears off with no broken stitches. Any quilt shop or catalogue have it.
Good luck

Evie,
I have a Bernina with embroidery attachment, so have all kinds of stabilizers. Go to:
http://www.embroideryonline.com/index.aspx , click on the "embroidery supplies" button and you will find their listing of all the stabilizers and what works best for what fabric and stitch density, tear aways, cut aways, etc. You can find this brand at a Bernina store or many other stores. They all work great! Hope you'll post the finished product.
Happy Sewing,
Lyn

Thanks for the suggestions.
I'm working on my Sun Bonnet Sue's and Suspender Sam's.
I'll check out that website and also the LQS.

A product called Stable Stuff is very nice. You leave it in and when it gets wet it turns into ultra thin fabric.

Evie, I don't remember who posted this--too lazy to look at the moment!--but someone wrote in recently to say that paper coffee filters work great. Probably more economical than stuff designed for quilting, too!

Are you talking about machine embroidery or are you doing the SBS blocks like the QIAD book? If like in the QIAD book, I used El's method and bought some fusible light weight stablizer (the brand I used was Pellon).

That was me - I use the paper coffee filters as a stabilizer. I went and bought the big ones at Sam's and then ironed them as flat as I could but didn't spend lots of time on that part. They work great for me.
