Joan you should be fine with the size you have for the background. The amount extra that you decide to cut the background depends on how you sew the pieces down on your applique. The more stitching that is done will cause more drawing up of the background shrinking it. Hope this makes sense.

Sorry I was at the hospital today with Mom and didn't check in here. Joan yes, MaryRose is right, that size is fine just keep your Sue the same size as your template so she'll be fine Thank you Mary Rose

Joan. I took a fat quarter and cut it in half. I used the blanket stitch on my machine and ended up with 18 tall and anywhere from 10.5 to almost 11 wide. Had I used a tighter stitch my background fabric may have been smaller.

I have 5 completed and 5 ready to sew down. I will be sewing today

I am home from church. It has warmed up enough today that I turned off the heater and opened some windows to air out the house. Sues will come join me in the living room and I will work on getting them fused down. Maybe that will be finished soon enough that I will be able to start sewing them down.

While we were in Texas I got 12 Sue's all fused down and ready for stitching. That won't happen until sometime after we finally get home. But it sounds like we are all making great progress on the swap that hasn't even officially started yet! LOL!

Thank you all who helped clarify the size for me. I ended up pulling the first Sue out and measuring some of them. They are all a bit different, but the size I have cut will definitely work. Joan

I have stuck down my first 'Welsh Sue', but 'Photobucket' isn't playing so I can't share her with you all
She is lovely though. As soon as I can get 'Photobucket' to talk to me I will let you see her! She's well worth the wait!!

All of my Sues are now fused to the background and ready to go to the machine. I don't know if I will get to work on them again until next weekend, but will try to get a few minutes of sewing on them in before then.

Ok, 'Photobucket' is now working for me! Here is my first fused 'Welsh Sue'.
I also posted a picture of how different the 'Welsh Sue' looks in the book (especially the well known Welsh bonnet!)

I love her Jacquie, she's great! We won't know how many to make until this becomes an official swap and we have signups I'll post the official one when Vinae's swap is finished
