Quilt in a Day Forums

Cathy, actually, this wasn't a swap quilt. I found a coffee mug block in a quilt magazine and thought it was cute. Made a couple into gifts, then decided if I liked it so much, I should use the pattern to make something for myself!

I converted the traditionally pieced pattern into a paper foundation pieced block...MUCH easier...and away I went! I got hung up on the borders, but now that is all behind me and the top is done! Now I am trying to decide if it needs anything else, then it's on to layer, quilt, and bind!

CaroleJ what sz is your quilt? I am thinking I just may have to do one to hang in our dining area. It would need to be a relatively small sz. Here I go wanting to do another project & cannot even get onto the ones I have started now! LOL Just what I need, another project. But what the hey! Right? Anxious to see yours.

Cathy, just measured it, it's 38" wide by 30" tall. The blocks are 6" finished. They are set in rows of 4 across and 3 down.

I found the block pattern in Better Homes and Gardens' 100 Quilt Blocks magazine. It's dated March 2007. I am a coffee drinker from 'way back, can't quit and don't wanna, and I thought the coffee mug and saucer were real cute. I made a couple w/ traditional piecing, just for giggles, the handle was NOT fun to do! But they worked up so charming (at least to me), I knew I wanted to use the pattern to make something for my own greedy self!

I love scrappy quilts and samplers. Had been wanting to make a family sampler, but hadn't been loudly called to do so, ya get my drift? *Someone* here on the forum posted a photo of *her* mug blocks (same pattern) and that was all the inspiration I needed! After I had found a background fabric that I loved (looks like kitchen tiles) and a couple coordinates in red, blue, and green, I found 12 fabrics that represent each month of the year. Pulled a bunch of backgrounds from stash in various light coffee tones and chose block backgrounds that best suited each fabric.

Converting the block to a paper foundation piece was a HUGE help for me; I love paper piecing because it is so precise. It made dealing with the bitty little mug handle MUCH easier!

I will try to post photos, but this is looking like a super-busy week for DH, and I am a doofus when it comes to anything computer-ish except e-mails and word processing! Maybe over the weekend?

CaroleJ thank you so much for the information. Something like that size would work perfect. I haven't done paper piecing but need to learn the technique. You aren't the 1st person to say the handles were not fun so I take your word for it. LOL Thanks again for the info.

Carole, just think of all the "new" walls in your new home. That will give you more places to display all your quilts

Sharon, you are so right!! I would rather have quilts than posters! Unless it's a poster of the Beatles...!

Home decorating can be approached in a whole new way if one is a quilter!

Today I put crystals on my sister's tote bag so now it is done - YIPPEE.

I made the label for my 'Desert Beauty' quilt and used El's applique method to stick it down. I just have to sew it down now and that project will be done, too.

Oh goody, the Desert Beauty is almost done....I'll PM you my address so you can mail it out quickly.

No ufo's finished here. I've been working on cleaning the sewing room after just throwing things in the closet during the holidays. What a mess I made. Poor DGD scrap drawer is now mine LOL. I will try to find her a pink crate to put her stuff in

I did work for several nights on a cross stitch stocking for DGS. Cant wait till thats done !

It's been a while since I could get back to my UFO's and I am looking forward to starting again. So I am back to quilting the tops for my grandchildren. Christmas was exciting and I accomplished a lot of really appreciated gifts. Then I was off on a side job, making a nap quilt that was "just for me." it is posted on the photo page. I will be giving my first quilt away in February for the big project of giving each grandchild a quilt when they turn 13. I thrilled and can hardly wait for her birthday.

By the way CaroleJ I want to thank you for adding the list of acronyms at the beginning of the month. I have been reading the discussions on this site for over a year and managed to get many of them figured out. One in particular I did not understand was the FART and I am so glad to know it is not a gas problem. LOL
