Wal-Mart Fabrics

I also have found exceptional fabric at Walmart -- once found Alexander Henry for $1.00 a yard (bought 8 yards) I would be lost if our Walmart closed out fabric. The LQS is so expensive, nothing less than $8 a yard. Cannot do that!

My budget only allows minimal purchases from LQS so I do most of my buying from JoAnns and Wal-Mart. I've never had trouble with the fabrics I've bought from either place.

I get a lot of my fabrics from Walmart for a $1.00 a yard and i don't have any problems with it.

I to shop for fabric at Wal-Mart and Jo-Ann's. I have never had a problem with the fabric at Wal-Mart. There is nothing wrong with the fabric they sell. As long as you look at the fabric you can tell. Sure on the $1 table there are bolts that I think are low grade and would not buy. A few times I got for $1 a yard some really good quality cotton. Hit or miss! The Vip or any of the Disney prints, fleece, military, just about anything you can find it there. This is so conveient for me being only 4 miles from my house. Last year the Wal-Mart further away closed out fabrics. I got some really good bargins. I heard they are taking out the fabric dept in all Wal Marts. The girl here told me that no matter what we do the 'youngsters' have made up their mind to take it out of all stores. She said she has tried to talk to higher up's and they all stand by the decision to faze it out. ;-( So much for the younger generation. They only want to make money. But I have to tell you that the fabric dept. seems to do very well. Always is busy at this store. Oh well, ya can't fight city hall! But if there is a petition I would sign it to keep fabric in the Wal Mart stores!

Quiltwithmom- i am the "younger generation'! and I am trying to make sewing a comeback. actually, I am 25, but have the heart and mind of a grandmother. (Didn't mean to get too off subject) I usually buy my fabrics from Hancocks or Walmart. When I lived in Tulsa, I also shopped at JoAnn's. (We do not have JoAnn's here sniff*sniff) But I have discovered that JoAnn's and Hancocks offer a lot of the same fabric as Walmart for almost twice the price.

I knew after I posted it didn't sound right. NOT the younger generation per say, the gal at Wal Mart was talking about the family that runs Wal Mart. In other words Sam probably would have NOT taken fabric out.

Our Wal-Mart is not as big as some I've seen in larger cities, but it is the only one in the area and draws shoppers from at least 3 counties. Shortly before we moved here about 2 years ago, management intended to shut down the fabric department, but so many sewers protested that they kept it in a much smaller state. As the employee there explained to me, they look at the dollars generated by square footage each month, and it's hard to compete with electronics and toys. The quality at ours is spotty, but it is possible to find some nice fabric if you stop by frequently and catch it before it disappears. I'm just grateful that we have on-line sites like Quilt in a Day, so we don't have to deal with the miles and traffic of going to fabric stores in the big cities.

I'm going to check and see if my Walmart carried Warm and Natural. I get it at Hobby Lobby for $9 yd., but I use my 40% off coupon. Amie

I buy quilting fabric at a Quilt shop or order it online. I haven't bought much fabric from Walmart but did buy a Summer Watermelon Fabric panel and backing to match once and it was fine. I think El has the best prices online for fabrics and some beautiful choices. Also, like Thimbleberries and Moda's.....there is a difference in the feel and thread count of QS fabrics and WAlmart fabrics....I bought Fat Quarters from Jo Ann's and they are ok for quilting. Still, I would not like to see Walmart close out its fabric dept. I buy a few things there occasionally.
