Re: sp gift of the month
I didn't want to make anyone feel bad about overspending. I hope I didn't hurt any feelings.
I think re-gifting something or the why-did-I-buy-that?-I'll-send-it-to-someone-else kind of thing is fine. I guess I just feel funny when someone spends $8.98 on a pattern or a charm set, and then sends more with it. If they put a note that told me 'I'm never going to get around to using this, so I hope you can use it,' I might feel less guilty. My last SP sent me a wonderful older quilt book -- you could tell it had been around awhile, but it has great ideas, and that is what is important. Like lorettav, I buy on sale and keep things around for the next package I need to send. And Cathy37208 has a good idea about making your own charms and jelly rolls (and they don't have to be as big as what you buy in the store).
And I worry about copyright laws for copying patterns. A lot of times you can find patterns from magazines on their websites, so we can copy those. Or ones from quilterscache.com or other online free pattern sites.
Okay, well, I got on my soapbox again. I'll get off. >head hanging down< (Oops -- hope I didn't hurt feelings... again.)
I think we have a lot of inventive people on this website and I'm looking forward to when the SPs get started again. Thank you, Cindyb for all you do! I don't know how you keep it all straight.

My quilt store has two sales a year... plus in October they have 20 FQ;s for $25... One sale is on 12/31 and 40% off the whole store... the other is on a persons b-day where we get 25% off.... last year I got SP stuff from each sale and still have some left for SP gifts... shopping sales is a super idea.... WE have another quilt shop who has a percentage off on Super Bowl Sunday.... it's the only Sunday they are open.... too fun

Here's a thought...... just my little humble opinion and you are all welcome to take or leave it..
But I like to think of the Secret Pal thing as not so much a GIFT, but a sharing. I like to share what I have, an idea in the form of a pattern or something I've actually made, a piece of fabric that I may not really be able to use after all, an extra notion (such as a seam ripper or some buttons etc I have too many of) I've picked up little doo-dads here and there and thought.. what a cute thing to share with a Secret Pal! Or if I've found something really cute that I like, and thought maybe one of you gals would like.. I'd get 2---one for me and one for you! So it's SHARING that becomes the most important part for me.
Like many here, I am on a limited budget, so my gifts may not be extravagant, but they are from the heart---a way for me to share the love and frienship I have received from so many. When having a Secret Pal seems more like a chore than a pleasure, then it's time to bow out.... and if I ever feel that way, I will take a break, step back, re-evaluate and remember that it's SHARING that counts
