*Cough, gasp, gulp for air* 35 hundred dollars. Wow! Well since I can't drop that much money on fabric I'll have to ask that from now on you think of me while buying this much fabric, then take pictures, then come back and tell me about it and post the pics - I'm gonna have to live vicariously through you. *laughing* Just kidding, if you're happy - then I'm thrilled for you. *hugs*

As for me I'm thinking that 3 yards might be a good estimate for stash buying. So far I haven't bought material for a stash...except a few fat quarters that were so pretty and they were on sale.;0)

$3500.00 on FABRIC!! You are crraaaaazzzzzzzzzeeeeeeee girlfriend! OMG how did you get away with that when you got home!

I usually buy 2-3 yards at a time, depending on the price and if I have something in mind. Sometimes I end up kicking myself, that I didn't get more. Most of the fabric in my stash is from QIAD and If there's only 3 yards left of something on sale, I take it all!

Have to watch the budget these days, so won't be buying anymore fabric for a little bit--it's killing me too with all the beautiful new things on sale here.

Ok girls, ya'll need to be nice to quilterbee!!!

Juliejazz, when I started quilting I didn't know how much to get either. My first several quilts were king and queen sizes, and the QIAD patterns called for 5-1/2 yards or more of one fabric and 3-4-1/2 of another. So, I only bought for the quilt I was making. Then I got on a roll and started building stash in earnest! Now if I see a fabric I really love, I buy a lot of it. I usually buy more of a tone on tone or neutral than I do of prints because they are more versatile. If it's on a good sale I buy enough for the backing, too, and if it's a king size then that means 9-1/2 to 10 yards for my size bed. If I really really love a fabric, I'll also get enough for a matching bedskirt or window topper because I've found that invariably I can't find it later if I need more of it. But for just stash building you don't need nearly as much, 2-3 yds. I give a lot of fabric away as gifts, I've got friends and my son's girlfriends who have started quilting and they can't afford it, so I share. There are about 5 ladies who "shop" at my house! LOL! And I love that I'm able to supply them so they can join this wonderful world of quilting.

quilterbee - If you or anyone else thought I was picking on you. I'm so sorry. I was only kidding. I'm a very live and let live kinda person. If buying a lot fabric is the thing that makes you happy, then have it. *hugs* What we're all willing to pay the big bucks for my not be the same thing. You'd probably all think I was nuts when I say that I saved for a computer that cost a bit more than quilterbee's fabric from Paducah, only so I could play a game. I needed a quality gaming computer for the game to play in the right way. I play a computer game and have for the last four years, it's called Sims 2. I take all kinds of heat and teasing for it, but nonetheless I totally enjoy my time spent playing my game. I also have a website that a group of friends and I opened up - yep, it's all about Sims 2 as well. I pretty much dislike the teasing and the, "come on Julie, why do you spend so much money and time playing a kids game. Are you going to grow up anytime soon," type comments. So if I hurt or upset you quilterbee - I'm truly sorry, no offense was intended. *hugs*

You guys didn't hurt my feelings!! Ya'll are all hilarious! No, I really like quilt-y things that all.....like ALOT. I work fulltime and work quite a bit of OT, too. So, when the shows come, I go all out...BIGTIME. I swear, I have actually hyperventilated and had to sit down when I go to a really good fabric place.

In Paducah- I hit H.O.P of course!
Then- El's at the Fairgrounds
Then- Els new shop
Then- The Pink Depot building down by the river
Then- The Civic Center
Then- Hobby Lobby(there was at least 500 quilters in there!)
Then- The Mall

We rented a full size car so we had plenty of room for the cotton!

Juliejaz 3 yards is good. That way you can use it for piecing or as a boarder.

it depends on what type of fabric it is, when I am shopping I as a rule will get at least 2-3 yards but if it is a border print I think what is the largest quilt I would make and what is the maximum that I could need for the outer borde and by accordingly if I can

If you don't mind me asking what is the regular (Not sale) price for a yard of material over there?
At a "Quilt" shop over here fabric is between $20-$28 dollars per metre (39"). Batiks are a wee bit cheaper and homespun varies from $6.99 to $8.99 per metre.

I pay $9-10 a yard in South Mississippi. Sometimes more, sometimes less. The local Walmart has fabric for $3-5 but you have to be very picky.
